This will be the first use of the olm for the oci on our 04 Trailblazer with the 4.2L Vortec I6,past oci's have been 5k/6mth and reset olm. My concern is that by my best guess it's going to be an 8.5-9K oci,i feel the oil will be ok (planning a used oil analysis) but,i'm not certain about the oem AC Delco filter especially since it's the ecore filter design PF61. I'm not crazy about going to a $13 filter,so what would be the best filter for this application? I'm thinking go to a P1. Thoughts or suggestions please.

i'm a wix fan for mid grade filters
Any mid price filter such as Wix, Napa gold, Mann, Bosch, P1 can easily do 10k OCI.
If you are an autozone rewards customer, you can use the $5 off coupon and get a K&N or Mobil 1 oil filter. That's one idea.
Another idea is to get a Fram Extended Guard filter from Walmart for around 9 bucks.
Outside of that the P1 or Wix is your best bet.

Good.I know there is some debate as to the ecore design being subpar.I have been using AC Delco filters a long time with no issues but not for the 8.5-9k oci range,they very well may be ok,will give it more thought before oc time.

Since GM "recommends" ACD filters, I don't see why they wouldn't go whatever distance the OLM determines. The same reasons that would cause your filter interval to be shortened would also cause the OLM reading to be reduced.
I also have an '04 Trailblazer I-6. I'm assuming you don't have the digital OLM "count-down" but rather the "change oil soon" light like I do. My OLM has been averaging 8K for the last couple of years.
I'm running Mobil 1 5w30 with a WIX 51522 filter. Given we have a 7 quart oil capacity, I don't see a problem with a combination of a quality oil, a quality filter, and 8K miles.

Any filter that you believe fulfills the claim of meeting or exceeding OEM spec's will work. The OLM knows how many hours you've had in fuel enrichment ..which is what loads your filter (by a BIG margin) most.
