I've been in my house for 23 years and have always wanted a garage. I just have a carport. Life keeps getting in the way and I've had to do other home repairs which were/are more important. Been thinking about adding on to the carport to cover both vehicles properly, but it's going to have to be "sometime".

I do 99% of my work outside. Sucks a bit when it's -20 but oh well. Dress warm and set the diesel heater up.

About the only mechanic work I do in the garage is oil and filter changes. I do sharpen my mower blades and work on the snowblower once in a while but most of my work is very light duty easy stuff. I would love to have a hoist for other repairs. I also change plugs very occasionally and coil packs one time on my Civic. I do like to clean and detail my vehiclew in the garage which is a 3 car attached with a natural gas heater.
65 years old and never had a garage. All car work gets done April to October. Only exception was a few years ago. I brought the car back to the dealer for a recall. The service writer said that during their complementary inspection, they discovered the car needed brakes front and back. When he told me the cost, I laughed, went home and ordered pads and rotors from Rock Auto. Doing brakes in the driveway in January was not fun!
In all fairness those "2 car garages" really only fit one car.
I have a two-car garage and I think it was built according to the measurements of an average car - it is exactly long enough and wide enough to fit two cars side-by-side and the mower and other stuff has to fit in the corners. It's very tight. I do most or my work outside in the driveway where there is room to move! I hate being in tight confines.
The garage on this house is actually part of the lower level so even without a heat outlet it stays in the 50's all winter. It also has hot and cold soft water but I dont wash inside due to the mess. I have had a similar setup since the early 90's. The barn is 1500sf so all our stuff fits inside including the fifth wheel. It has a natural gas radiant wall heater and a hose outlet (not soft)

Sold my house earlier this year and moved into an apartment. So I am garage deprived. Have done one oil change using my MityVac. Need to change an ignition coil and do an oil change on another car but have to wait for a warm weekend for it. It's just too dark after work.
Laid in the cold, rain and snow for 16 years, at my current house until we built our garage back in 2021. Love my garage garage now and do not missed getting snowed or rained on. Buy a carport and then start enclosing the sides yourself to save some cash.
I sort if did the same, but I'm houseless and living in a garage.

Didn't have an official garage until I was 40 and married. Did most of my work outside, hot or cold, or used a friend's garage. Built character. Moved close to MCB Quantico and used a communal garage space just off base where lots of Leathernecks worked on their car stuff when we lived in the townhouse. First garage was small 1 car that barely fit my Bimmer and Gixxer. Would have to get up early and de-snow the minivan for her because it was parked outside. Moved to SC and picked our floorplan with garage, which to be honest, I was partial to because it had the largest 2 car of them all at 30'x36'. Holds momma's car, my car, all my tools and OPE, along with enough room to use the Quick Jack and still walk around the car. Got a bit smaller because the golf cart now lives there. Constant battle keeping my wife from "storing" her stuff in there. I just take whatever she puts in there and place it in her craft room. How ya like that? (I think to myself

We had no garage or carport the first 5 - 6 years we were married.
First house we purchased had a double garage. We kept wife's car in it and my boat on the other side.
Second house we bought 26 years ago had the attatched double garage.
Previous owner had also built a seperate shop behind the house. This was a huge selling point when wife showed me this house.
We parked her car and my work trucks in front garage till I retired.
Words cant describe the nice feeling on cold and raining mornings when I had to leave at 05:30am to be able to walk out door into the warm garage then into the truck.
Back yard shop was used as my toy room to store and work on my boats and collector cars. Since my boats and cars are all gone now the wife uses the shop as her big storage facility. Of course its still full of my tools (covered in dust now) and all of my car & truck detailing products I once used all the time. We been looking to move and one of the requirements on the next house that we both agree on is that it is to have a double garage since we appreciate and use current one so much.
