Just got the netgear WNDR4300 router. It's nice, but the range could be better. I have an older linksys WRT54GL router that works fine. Is there anyway I can make the linksys router act as a repeater?? using the netgear as the primary and only router.

You're having range problems with that router? Are you running it in dual-band mode and are your clients using dual-band adapters/antennas? Try changing frequencies.

I really, for now, only need the 2.4 mode, but when you get into the netgenie program, you can't pick which one, it only stays in auto mode. I know that the 5g mode has terrible range, but I can't turn it off of auto. Maybe it has something to do with me letting that router setup security and I think it's all WES. When I first hooked it up on Tuesday, it was spitting out full bars from anywhere in the house and 10 MPS, now I'm barely getting a signal in the bedrooms and it's around 7 MPS. Something happened and I'm not tech savy enough to know what/where to look for it.

Agreed. You may want to use some basic wifi freeware if you are able, and see where your signal issue starts. Avoid repeating with wifi.

Are there alot of wifi networks in range? Alot of things can interfere with a wireless signal (concrete walls, long distances, microwaves, also if you have old school phones running on 2.4 although not as common as it once was.. Try changing channels.. could be wifi interference. Not sure if you can use your old 54g as a repeater. Too late to bring it back? I would ask to exchange it for something a little more upscale if you are still able to..

The router he bought is a very good one. I see no reason to return it.

Make sure the firmware is at the latest version. Go to netgear website for the firmware. I have seen new equipment, just out of the box, with old firmware.

It's WEP, not WPA. Got it of off Amazon and could return it, but holy cow....when I first hooked it up, I was impressed!!! That thing was blazing fast....don't want to return it if I don't have to....my spidey sense tells me some kind of setting went off. I'm cool going to a WPA security, but just not comfortable going "inside" it to re-set it all up. I need to sit down and learn about this thing....but the thing is....that router didn't come with any sort of disc or manual.

wep might as well be open. its like putting a sign on your door saying lock broken please dont enter.

wireless router isnt complicated to setup.

if you need some help post some screenshots of what you dont understand (I'd try googling it first as thats instant answer)

basically with a wireless router you
1) pick the frequency and channel, encryption method, password for the router, router name(for wireless) router wireless password

you want to use WPA2 encryption, 2.4 ghz channel 1,6,or 11
whichever channel is least busy(can find out with free smartphone app - inssider)

Pick a router name that doesnt identify you but easy recognizable. ie. not your last name, something like Duckshack, FBISurveillanceVAN, whatever. Mine happens to be called Toomanytires

If you have any questions about "channel bandwidth" or other options usually you can just leave it to whatever the default setting is.

also maybe explain your basic house layout and constuction and where your wireless is located and how its oriented.

Yes, you can with DD-WRT. Just Google it and the instructions are straightforward to flash DD-WRT and setting it up as a repeater.

I had the same(bad)experience with my new WNR2000v4 was fine at first then i noticed my DL speeds were way slower so after some trouble shooting and on the phone with NETGER tech we managed to resolve the issue but it didn't last long and speeds were back to being slow so back on the phone with tech i went.

anyway we came to the conclusion is was a defective router returned it for another and so far so good.

thanks.....I did read something that going with WEP could slow down performance....but this thing did it all automatically and I was pretty happy about that. My old router, a Belkin, had no security on it whatsoever and it was making me nervous being out there for free.

Yes you can use DD-WRT, tomato, or any other open source firmware to make one of the router a repeater (I use the same thing on WRT54GL). Which mode doesn't matter, I used WPA myself.

I can't imagine how it would auto-update to newer firmware sitting in a box on a retailers' shelf, so this is understandable.

DD-WRT...is that the program that comes up when you enter IP address 192.168.1.1? ......yes, I'm that un-savy.

A repeater will automatically cut your speed in half at the very least...

Sounds like the channel or the antenna needs to be moved.

Aaaargh, we had this issue. I had a bad signal to the DVD player, bought a nice little "booster".

Little did I know it should be called a road block!

Yeah, honestly, I've never had any luck with repeaters, at least the consumer grade ones. Quality/speed of the link always suffered.

I agree that the OP should try to experiment with better placement of his main router. And if his device has external antennas, he might also play around with their direction to see if that makes any difference.
