Retired NYC LEO here. I conceal carry all the time because of situations like this. Especially when traveling into the epicenter of lawlessness, also know as the 5 Boros’s of NYC. I’m licensed and keep up my LEOSA/HR-218 certs yearly. I can lawfully carry even where other CCW holders can’t. Including “Gun-free” zones. (The stupidest zone ever created on earth)Good question, I only know a few retired LE that carry, and they go anywhere in the state. Other than that I honestly don't know. NY and CA are very tough when it comes to carrying a handgun.
Call me crazy but my carry weapon is to save life not take it. I would not shoot someone over a vehicle.Another reason for concealed carry.
First and foremost, please don’t take this as an attack on your statement. It is interesting that everyone thinks that if they have a gun, they will just shoot their way out of situation.

He was going to start college in the Fall …Since it's california, I imagine the gas station attendant will be charged with assault on the victim (carjacker). Poor boy was just trying to get ahead, and he could have been injured by the mean attendant while doing so...
Also, in many states, if you shoot someone in these circumstances, chances are, YOU will be the one going to jail. And he will hire a lawyer and sue you.Call me crazy but my carry weapon is to save life not take it. I would not shoot someone over a vehicle.
Based on the story this was a strong armed robbery (ie, hand-to-hand with no weapons involved.) This seems more like a reason for Jiu Jitsu/Wrestling training and better situation awareness.
And I just read something wise a minute or two ago:It is interesting that everyone thinks that if they have a gun, they will just shoot their way out of situation.
You know, there is a kid(s) in my car, but hey, instead of deescalation, why not getting into gun fight and risk lives of my kids, myself, other bystanders because??
Confidence and stupidity is really deadly.
There are a lot if “if’’s” and “but’s” in scenario that is always extremely chaotic and depends on perceived danger.First and foremost, please don’t take this as an attack on your statement.
I am a true believer of the First amendment, as well as the Second……..that being said…………
Ummmmm, no.
I carry a weapon to protect the lives of myself and my loved ones. NEVER would I use a weapon to “Shoot my way out of a situation”!
My weapon is solely a defensive device that would not even be displayed unless the person on the other side levels their weapon in my direction (hence, concealed)…….then, and only then, would I open up the wrath of our Lord on that individual.
God have Mercy on that man…………
I work in institution where 99% have extensive experience using all kind of fire arms. Only one person actually has concealed weapon. Most of those that jump on concealed issue fall into group where my neighbor is, who said this when school shooting issue is discussed:”i live 5 min from school, and I have AR15. If something happens, I am there to take care of it.”And I just read something wise a minute or two ago:
You know that: "Assumption is the mother of all screw-ups."
The incident I believe happened to a female so in that case she could have claimed the disparity of force as a deadly threat. Which in most places is justified. I think most gun guys forget or blatantly ignore that not very problem is solved by pew pew. Many are better solved by avoidance, de-escalating, evasion or hand fighting. When your only tool is a hammer everything looks like a nail. Also, in many states, if you shoot someone in these circumstances, chances are, YOU will be the one going to jail. Most gun guys forget or blatantly ignore?! With all the gun owners out there you would think good people are gunning down people in waves. The incident I believe happened to a female so in that case she could have claimed the disparity of force as a deadly threat. Everything you say is true. Regarding the Martial Arts it depends on your age. A man in his late 60's is a lot different than a man in his late 20's. I have a 4th degree black belt in Jiu-Jitsu and studied Karate and Philippine stick and knife fighting for many years. Things change when you get old, and as a rule of thumb most men are stronger than women, it was a woman that had her car stolen. Regarding the gun, I'd be willing to bet now that woman would rather have had the gun and not needed it, than needed it and not have it, as in this case. Opinions will vary. I'd be very happy with one stick, it compensates nicely for my age. In a more gun friendly state I'd carry one.Call me crazy but my carry weapon is to save life not take it. The US is a pretty safe place by and large so defensive gun uses are pretty low. Statistically most people carrying will never have to pull their weapon and even less will have to actually use it if pulled. So no I don’t believe good guys are just blasting folks left and right. And I do believe very much in the right to carry. Most gun guys forget or blatantly ignore?! With all the gun owners out there you would think good people are gunning down people in waves.
Sounds like you trained appropriately to be able to handle anything that may come. Good on you. For sure age, health, athleticism, and size matter a whole a lot. No disputing that.Everything you say is true. Regarding the Martial Arts it depends on your age. A man in his late 60's is a lot different than a man in his late 20's. I agree, but in California...you want to be sure you know the pros and cons of what you're suggesting!Another reason for concealed carry.
Everyone doesn’t think that way. Shooting someone is the last thing I want to do, but to protect myself and my family you better believe I’d do it. I’m all for de-escalation but sometimes that simply doesn’t work. And those kids in your car are the best reasons in the world to carry a firearm. It is interesting that everyone thinks that if they have a gun, they will just shoot their way out of situation.

Sir, with all due respect, someone aiming a deadly weapon in anyone's direction is more than "perceived", thereby justifying the use of deadly force to defend the lives of yourself and/or family. Thanks for your input. There are a lot if “if’’s” and “but’s” in scenario that is always extremely chaotic and depends on perceived danger.
