This is BITOG.

Michelin tires are to BITOG what Bernie Sanders is to Reddit; a savior, the messiah ... perfect in every aspect.

LOL, true. Guy asks what tires to get and if he doesn't end up with Michelins he made the worst decision of his life.

So to be fair-we are talking about the newer made model of Michelin tires.

Reports here (and elsewhere) are saying the newer Michelin tires ARE MUCH MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO DRY ROT AND ARE APPARENTLY A DIFFERENT RUBBER COMPOUND.

OK sure, what references are we using for this new rubber compound? In any event, Michelin haters have always used the dry rot and cracking complaint, for as long as I've been on BITOG.

In the end, it's OP's choice what tires he puts on. I can only say what my previous experience was, and that it is 90% I'll put Michelins on the F150 when it's time in a few months - because of that experience.
CapriRacer even says Michelins are more prone to dry-rot. You can see where he talks about them in my post here:

/argument and hijack; however OP did mention that Michelins were on his list and hearing the pros and cons were hopefully helpful to him.

Discount Tire treated me right again. I got back half of what I paid for the Yokohamas. I ended up with the Michelin Defender LTX. The $70 rebate along with the credit for the old tires, it was to good of a deal to not pass up on 70,000 mile tires. I HOPE these will last until we decide to get rid of the Pilot.

Thanks for all the input guys! I really appreciate it.

Not exactly.

First, let me start with the term "Dry Rot". Technically, tires don't do that. The term is supposed to apply to stuff that is attacked by a fungus that literally rots the stuff - like wood does. Wikipedia - Dry Rot

What happens in tires is "fatigue cracking" - and that is a function of the amount of stress, the amount of cycles, and the material involved.

In Michelin tires, they use harder/stiffer rubber compounds in certain parts of their tires - and those are more prone to cracking than similar rubber compounds.

- HOWEVER -

Where those compounds are used in Michelin tires are areas where the cracking is much, much less consequential. In other words, the level of cracking that is acceptable in Michelin tires would be cause for removal in other brands.

So-I have seen pictures of Michelins where the sidewalls are almost falling off the tire- (as Nick1994 has mentioned)that's not cause for concern?

I did not read where he said that?

They started to get small chunks coming out of the sidewall

yes thats not all of it....I said he did not see where he said chunks coming out of the sidewall was not a cause for concern.

Do a Google search for "michelin sidewall cracks" and go to the images page.

The first row shows typical normal weathering on Michelin tires. (or tyres depending on where you live

)

I agree with Capri Racer, after having Michelins on all my vehicles for the last 8-10 years it's normal.

Every single car here except one has Michelins on it. The overwhelming majority are LTX MS2's and have shown no predisposition to any exceptional cracking or weathering.

Of course most are work vehicles and do not get much tire dressing applied either...

It's really amazing how other "name brand" tires can go through their life and not crack, or have the sidewalls "flake off"-but expensive Michelin tires dry rot/crack/flake and it's normal.....

Your concerns are valid and I admit to being alarmed the first time I noticed this on my wife's Wrangler, with only around 30k on the tires. Then I did a bunch of research, and kept a close eye on them.

But since they made it 160k miles (That's not a typo - 160,000 miles) and the cracks remained pretty much the same throughout their life, I'm a believer.

Now to be fair, if chunks had started coming off things would have happened differently; but never lost one piece of rubber from the sidewalls. I liken it to one variety of steel that is designed to rust on the outside to form a protective layer to preserve the metal underneath. Perhaps Michelin's rubber compound "gives" on the outer layer to protect the integrity of the layers below. I don't know; but what I do know is they never leaked air and lasted 160k.

Hey, if it's a concern, don't buy Michelin. We all like what we like.

Here's what they looked like. You could stick your finger nail in them and pull back where they were chunking off/splitting. They were less than 3 years old when this picture was taken.

The set of Michelins before these went to 6 years old and were splitting like a taco between the tread and the sidewall, you could see white underneath starting to stick out (some other ply layer or something?)

And I agree, we all like different brands of products. In my 3 experiences, if they didn't crack like they do, I'd be a Michelin fan. It just doesn't work in my climate. I do have to admit that they were very smooth and quiet with great tread life.

So-here is my question. With vast miles of Interstate here in Utah-the majority of which have an 80mph speed limit-should I feel safe with those Michelin tires pictured going that speed?

[/quote] I replaced a set of 8 year old OEM Michelins with 25K on them with Yokohama tires because of the sidewall cracks near the rim.

That picture show cracks worse than the Wrangler's Michelins at 160k....guess the desert is tougher on tires than other areas.
