Indymac I would trust it now coming from you and I happen to have a bottle in the garage so maybe I will use it. It has done great things for me in the crankcase of engines...

It's goopy and even when mixed with the oil it's narsty as I have seen it.

As per the Auto-RX sites reccomendations or the whole bottle?

I will put it in later today... Then do I do a fluid exchange when done to get all the auto-rx and old fluid out?

I doubt that stuff works.

Just use BG quick clean for transmissions. I wouldn't worry about not having a filter. If you have clumps big enough to clog the screen, your transmission is probably toast anyway.

I will try this first since I have it and then I will use the BG stuff if it doesn't work as I can't find it (BG) on this side of the border easily.

Ok I put the Auto-Rx in in the prescribed 6oz dose as recommended and took it on a drive as required. The fluid still looks cherry red and it could just be me but I swear it's already shifting better so maybe there is goop stuck on the screen or $!#@ floating around.

We will see how it goes... I think I'm going to run it for longer than 1,000 miles (1600km's) as specified as I will have lots of running around to do this week and then I'm going to Ottawa (1100 km's round trip - Just over 600 miles) next weekend so that will be a good long hot run for the treatment to do its work because as I remember this cleaner likes the heat.

When I get back I will do a fluid exchange with Amsoil ATF and see how it is then.

Transmission is a bit overfilled at the moment but I don't see any foaming happening so I think I will just leave it alone.

Your transmission will thank you, and so will your check book. The directions say to run it for 3K miles now and then do a full flush. The AMSOIL flush sounds like a great plan.

I've treated my Tundra with it twice at 1K mile cleanings. And I treated my daughter's Avalanche once with a 3K mile cleaning. No ill effects, only great things happened. I consider it mandatory preventive and corrective maintenance from now on.

It's the same product as for engines... I took it out for a longer drive because I was in the mood for Pizza and it seems to be getting better already.

I can't wait to drive it to Ottawa next weekend on the 5 hour each way drive time. That should really do it good.

I will order some Amsoil ATF and do a fluid exchange when I get back into town... What I will do is disconnect the cooler return line and let it run out with the engine running (cold of course) until it runs dry. Shut it down and put in 4 litres and then start it up again and continue filling back up.

This way I get all the old stuff out before new stuff goes in.

I'm going to get a Magnefine from Napa on Tuesday and install it to catch whatever the Auto-RX releases in the next 3K miles. Then I will cut it open to see and put a new one on after the fluid exchange is done so it's all clean and good to go...

I have used the Lubegard trans flush, a non-solvent cleaner, a few times on transmissions and even engines. Results were ok. I have had some very good results with ARX in transmissions that were having issues. I am glad they changed the mileage to 3000 and feel that is a minimum, especially if using a Magnefine, which is another good idea.

I got a bunch of the Lubegard stuff on clearance for .50 to $1/bottle when AA was clearing it out a few years ago. I am still trying to use it up....

I think the new Amsoil flush may use similar technology to the Lubegard.

I'm going to let the ARX slosh around in there for about a week (1,000 km's or so - 600 miles) and then put on a Magnefine filter just before I head to Ottawa the following weekend which is a 5.5 hour drive each way. That should really clean and remove lots of narsties floating around the transmission.

Then when I get home I will continue driving it until I hit 3,000 and do a complete fluid exchange.

As for the Amsoil flush I think it's a harsh solvent shock type product because they specifically tell you not to put the transmission under load or to drive with the product in the transmission.

Steve, with the routine maintenance your F4A51 has seen since day one, I can't possibly see how any flushes/filters, etc are going to make it last longer than it already will! Every AT is going to have some clutch dust in it's belly. FWIW, you can remove the front pan for a more thorough wipe down and I *think* that filter can be removed and replaced by pulling the valve body block once you have that front pan off. The pics I've seen of the F4A51 filter look like a typical big fine mesh/screen like an old school domestic AT filter. You just can't get at the darn thing easily.

Joel,

Oh I know, but I want every mile possible without needing a rebuild and investing in a filter adapter and some Auto-RX is cheap IMO.

I know the screen is removable once you take out the valve block but I'm told you need a special tool to put or take out the valve block etc. and I don't want to muck around with it.

I would rather just keep the oil super clean and filtered to keep the muck level down on the screen/mesh and from being abrasive in the transmission.

My 89 VW Cabriolet transmission (automatic) has a screen/mesh filter and it was spotlessly clean and it hadn't had the oil changed regularly by the previous owner and it's a high reving 3 speed that is cooled only by air (no trans cooler). Mine has a rad cooler and auxiliary cooler on top of that so I should be more than fine as is but I want "extra" clean and protection.

I hear that. I'd be a little squeamish pulling that valve body out myself given I have no idea of the procedure. Regardless, most of the "AT flush" products are harmless these days. I know one of my older brothers just took his 2006 F150 2wd in for it's first AT service at the Ford dealership. They talked him into a "flush kit" which involved some additive and some drive time (by a Tech). All said and done I think they flogged him for ~$150. I guess my point is, if dealerships are going to stand by these products for such a finicky, involved and EXPENSIVE pc of hardware, they gotta be harmless.

I was just surprised to see clutch gunk on the dipstick after the oil drained and in the higher amounts on the drain plug than I had seen before and thought I had better flush what I can out of there so it's not acting like sandpaper on my clutches.

I read about the new flush in the Amsoil magazine. Have not tried it yet, but will in the future. It's not solvent based. Their old engine only flush was solvent based. With that said I would be running RX just like you are doing.

AMSOIL Engine and Transmission Flush (FLSH) helps restore fuel economy, increase operating efficiency and reduce emissions in gasoline and diesel engines, and automatic transmissions. Its potent, detergent-based formula cleans sludge and deposit build-up, promoting lower operating temperatures and reduced oil consumption. AMSOIL Engine and Transmission Flush is safe on parts and can be easily disposed of with waste oil.
