My wife and I are having a house built this summer on land we purchased. 2.4 acres of it is grass. None of it slopes steep
except where I'll need to use a weed trimmer along the road. I'm thinking about buying a stand on mower: Scag, Ferris, Toro or Wright. I'm wanting something
that has a good history for parts support years down the road and will be easy to use for both my wife and I.

I've been happy with my John Deere 757. Easy to use, fast, excellent cut, durable (I'm at somewhere around 1800 hours), and John Deere has a history of supporting their products for years. I can still get parts for my 40+ year old 210.

Do you want a mower or a tractor?

Just for mowing its hard to beat a zero-turn style.
I'd get at least a prosumer model. skip the cheapest consumer models.

The Bad-Boy ZT Elite at TSC is nice... but plenty of nice ones out there
just $$$$.

Sometimes you can just look at them side by side and see which are cheapened out and not going to last.

Make sure its garage or shed kept and you will double its life.

I mowed 10 acres for over 10 years with a JD316 but those kind of "garden" tractors dont have the maneuverability if you just are mowing with it.

Could always go commercial as you mentioned. Even more $$$$

That lawn calls for a ZTR mower unless you need a large garden tractor for other chores. I can vouch for the Wright 52 inch Sentar I bought in 2005. Still going strong and now being used in my son's business. Mine had the fold down seat. It's not a stander.

I mow 5 acres with a Hustler Z 60in ZTR. During the 11 years I've owned it I have only put gas, grease and oil in it. I'm still on original blades and belts. If you're gonna get one, spend the extra money for the commercial grade. You'll be glad you did down the road.

I would not recommend a standing mower.

I did similar research 4 years back to mow 3 acres. checked with a friend who runs a (very busy) landscaping business. Exmark ZTR mower with Kawasaki engine.

If you just want to mow, a zero turn machine is a great choice. If you want the ability to do other things such as snow plowing, gardening or other things I recommend a good garden tractor. John Deere makes a good garden tractor. Don't buy the ones sold at big box stores. They are just riding mowers. Think carefully and long term. Don't go with something cheap.

Toro, Exmark or Scag.

My grandfather has a 2000ish Scag 3 wheel zero turn rider. It is 61", and he uses it to mow his field, which takes 6 hours. He is getting older, so sometimes he waits and the grass gets high. That mower has been very solid and reliable. The few parts we have needed have been easy to find and not too expensive.

What dealers are nearby? That can help make your decision easier service-wise.

Recommend a Craftsman push mower. Great exercise for all us fat lazy Americans. No need to spend thousands to get the grass cut. Or just have a lawn crew mow it. That way you won't have to maintain the mower, store it, buy gas for it, blades, oil and so on. Whew........
