Autozone currenty has free (after rebate) Bosch oil filters 'till Jan 15th. Like others have mentioned Advance has buy one get on rebadged Puroltors. For the $ you can't beat FormulaShell on sale in the .59-.79 range, I usually buy two cases of it. If ya don't already then use the coupons in the Sunday paper.
Switch the VW to Rotella T-Synthetic. It'll cost 2/3 as much as M1, and should provide very good protection and cleanliness. For further savings, use 15w40 HDEO during the summer months.
Checker/Schuck's/Kragen in my area often has specials on Chevron Supreme for $.59/qt. This would be excellent for your Ford. They do these specials on most of their oils, and they seem to rotate to a different oil every week or two. Keep your eye out for those coupons, and you can get a top quality conventional oil for cheap!
Keep your eyes out for coupons for other auto stores, and for anything else you need, and you'll save a bit of money.

I would use any available new GF-4 formulation oil on the Ford along with Motorcraft filters and not worry about it. Watch the sales and you can pick up name brand GF-4 rated oils for under $1.00 a quart. Stick with any major brand and don't worry about it for your OCI IMO.

Delo would be a good cheap alterntive. You could easily do 7,500 OCI with this oil
Castrol GTX and Purolator filters. Your engines will be just fine. Forget about the cars, worry about those late night ice cream runs!

If you're ever near Martin,TN, all Chevron and Havoline dinos at the WalMart there are only $1.04 per quart.
I just read your other post! Ok you are not going to save a small fortune but you could save a little if warranty is not an issue! You could run Delo 15W40 in the warm months on your VW and not hurt a thing. Technicly most 15W40's are safe to use down to 10F but why chance it! I would run Mobil 1 0W40 in the winter months just to play it safe!!
You might also consider Rotella-T Synthetic 5W40 Walmart sells it for $6 a gallon!! Walmart SuperTech filter will work just fine for you and they are like $1.88 per filter.
For the Ford watch Rite Aid adds. They usualy have Havoline oil for $.99 a quart two or three times a year! It is a good dino and will save you $.50 a quart over the Motorcraft. Supertech filters will work just fine for it as well.

Rotella 5w40 for $6/gal..Wow!! Where is this cheapest of the cheap Walmart?
Wavinwayne, I'd second on the affordable hdeo Rotella 5w40 syn for your GTI. Your horizontally oriented engine has a bigger oil sump(unlike my longi Passat engine with a puny sump) plus your vehicle/engine is not included in the sludge warranty fiasco(only pre '04 B5 Passats/A4).

OOPS!!!!! I posted taht Walmart sells Shell Rotella-T Synthetic 5W40 for $6 a gallon. That is a definate typo it should have read $12.99 a gallon. Sorry!
Either find a neighbor with similar oil needs or put a discreet add in your local paper or advertising guide for "$5 Oil Changes - You Supply the Mobil 1 Oil and Filter" and leave your telephone number.
When a suitable "partner" calls you explain the deal with the catch that the OCI is 3k miles just like Jiffy Lube. Then you recycle their oil in your vehicles!

I'd run the Amsoil 5w30/ASL in both of these, with a 10,000 mile oil and filter change interval. It meets the VW 502 spec for the 1.8L turbo engine and is more shear stable than the 0w-40 you are currently using. I see no problem getting 200k+ out of both these motors. I'd also highly recommend using the Amsoil ATF in the ford transmission.
The savings in this case are basically in terms of your labor and re-cycling of used oil ....

Very interesting; LBJ has done work on some of my cars in the past. I've been very happy with them. If I ever decide to use Amsoil, that's where I'll get it. Thanks for the info.

Autozone recycles/takes your old oil for free, at least the one I go to does.
Now these guys running 15W40. Someone said it's good for regular cranking down to 15F. You don't actually live where it gets cold do you? By cold I mean 32F or less throughout the winter. I just can't imagine pumping a "15W" in these tiny, tightly clearanced engines on a cold start in the dead of winter.
I wouldn't go with anything thicker than a "5W" for the winter in a newer VW engine, preferably a "0W", but that's just my opinion.
