I love to look this stuff up but am way too busy. Anyway, just bought a 2005 Mercury Mountaineer 4.0 V6 and I see that it is not the old oil filters I am familiar with (FL1A, FL400s), but is metric.

So a google search shows it is FL820s. My Baldwin filter dealer says it's a Baldwin B329. Problem is that this filter is extremely small, like for a generator. I want something about as big as the Baldwin B2 (FL1a). Anybody know what bigger filter would fit and has same gasket and threads with antidrainback valve?

I got the AWD, I suspect it is the kind that if one wheel is on ice, it spins and the rest sit still. Considering I would have accepted a 2WD, no problem. Not much need for the extra traction around Detroit. We do get some heavy snow, but rarely did the Aerostar have a problem with it. Seems ground clearance is the big factor in snow on pavement.

You do realize this question has been asked before, right? A simple search for "bigger fl80s" turns up this one, among others:

https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/larger-oil-filter-fl-820s-any-benefits.140410/

The FL820s is not that much smaller than the the FL1A, as it is the same outer diameter and about 1" shorter, so about 80% of the volume. Hardly a small filter. Couple that with the fact that the 820s is rated with the same removals at a higher flow rate (11-13gpm) versus the FL1A (7-9 gpm) and you've got a filter that likely filters better despite the smaller size.

the FL820S (OE spec for this motor) is a fairly decent sized filter.
If you want something bigger there isn't much..

1) My FL1A is about 3.75 wide by 5 inches long. Whatever is on the Mountaineer now is about 3.25 wide by 4 long. I assumed correct filter was on the truck, but apparently not. I now see a window sticker that a fast type lube shop did the change, says when to have next change and specifys 5w20. But the manual specifies 5w30. This is one more reason I don't go to quick lube shops, probably a universal filter.

2) I don't know what the spec filter is. My parts guy gave me the Baldwin part number, but the Motorcraft number I got from a Google listing and so may not be correct. I'll get the Baldwin catalog up and see what the size is. Plan to change ASAP and will report back what filter is on it.

3) Yes, the search feature. Sorry, searching has not been that easy in the past. Maybe it is easier now.

Anyway, thanks for the info.

Just checked Baldwin site. B329 is smaller: 3 11/16 wide by 3 7/8 long. I am sure it will suffice and since Baldwin does not give a longer version, I guess I'll stick with the specifice part number. Maybe the quickie lube filter is right, I did not get under buy held the tape measure up thru the wheel well, 3.25 measured that way could very well be 3.69.

All the 4.0 SOHCs take 5w30. That was one of the motors that Ford exempted from the 5w20 requirement.

There are literally hundreds of thousands of trucks like yours running the SOHC motor with FL-820S filters with no problems related to the filter.

^ +1

Run a MC 820S sized filter and sleep well. There is a 5.8, 4.6 2V, and 3.0 4V at home that all run Motorcraft 820's.

I will run the specified filter in a Baldwin. Gonna get that 5w20 out of there before the hot weather hits. Thanks all.

Sounds like you may have found what the quickie lube place that serviced my new to me F150 put on it as well - mine was a Pennzoil PZ-173 I believe, and it was the smaller diameter type filter as well. The quickie lube lineup had consolidated the FL-820s filters to this smaller filter. Pain to get off when a gorilla put it on and you only deal with larger filters...

When you get a FL-820s or reputable cross reference, you'll see it is a decent sized filter and likely larger than the one the quickie lube place called for.

And I'd agree, with the 4.0, get the 5w20 out of it - there is a reason Ford never back specified this motor! (I've got one in my '97 Explorer.)

I plan on running Maxlife Synthetic. Love this 4.0 V6 (244 CID). It is a beastly, torquey engine. My son said it sounded like a truck, like our Chevy 454 motorhome as I pulled in the driveway, but inside it is super quiet compared to what I am used to. With 4500 pound weight and p245/65/17 tires it really feels glued to the road. Tires are brand new Dakota H/T Definity which I understand are decent tires.

Ill be sure to post the filter name and number that is on it now, soon as I pull it off. Hopefully this weekend.

The filter was a Valvoline VO-105. It's only 3" wide. The new filter, Motorcraft FL820s, is 3.75" wide (same width as FL1A). Both same length. Five quarts Maxlife Synthetic 10w30 and I am good to go.

The VO-105 (made by Purolator) is their version of the FL-500S. They are compatible with the FL-820S, and since Purolator doesn't make the FL-820S sized filters under Pennzoil/Performax/Quaker State or Valvoline branding, shops are getting the FL-500S sized filter and using it on FL-500S and FL-820S applications. There really isn't any issue with this, but I, too, Like using the larger filter.

I was suprised that the Wix had the bypass valve in the top (dome end) of the can, so I will stick with Motorcraft which has the bypass in the base of the can. I'll have to check where Baldwin puts it.

The FL820s would have 50-100% more filter element than the FL500s, depending on the average diameter of the filter insert and assuming the same length. Big difference.

Just checked and the Baldwin also has the bypass in the dome end of the can. Guess I stick with Motorcraft filters for now.

Wonder if there are other quality brands with the bypass in the base? Maybe Amsoil.

I believe the Napa Gold has the bypass in the base. At least for my 4cyl Ford Contour filter, aka FL200S, since discontinued by Motorcraft, it does. Just stick with the Motorcraft FL820S. Buy them at WalMart for $3.67. It's a bargin!

What OCI are you going for? The newer Ford's that use the FL820S seemed to be spec's for 7,500 miles from what I've read.

Whimsey

The Wix was dome end bypass, figure NAPA is same.

Nothing wrong with Motorcraft filters. Probably stay with Motorcraft.

I forgot to look up the OCI in the book. 111,000 miles, first time with Maxlife Syn, probably go 5000 max this time and see what it looks like.

Just realized its got the SOHC 4.0 V6. Given that, it's odd it was not specified to run 5w20 like the similar design V8.
