what does the engine do when you try to start it? Does it turn over just not start or does it make clicking noises or does it do something else?

It trys to start but it doesnt i thought it mit be a glow plug but idk

I don't know VW's, but any diesel needs help starting when it's below 50. You could give it a shot of starting fluid, but you must do it correctly. Get another person to crank the engine and once it's turning, give it a small shot. If it starts and runs ok, and restarts as long as it's warm, it's most likely the glow plug.

I'm not too familiar with diesels but usually if a gas engine turns over just doesn't "fire", then it's either not getting fuel or spark. Have you changed the fuel filter before and/or as you said, check the glow plugs? I know a guy that had an old Ford F250 diesel that took him forever to start in cold weather. he would have to let the glow plugs warm up for about 2-3 mins before he tried to start the engine.

The most likely cause is a glow plug. When its summer you can get away with more things. You can check the glow plugs with an ohm meter to see if they are functioning. Each one should have a very low resistance (like a few ohms) and they should all be similar. But you need to disconnect each one from the supply bus when you check it with an ohm meter.

Olive you have to determine if the engine is turning over too slowly, no glow plug activity, or frozen fuel.
It's 4 below where I'm at, so I'd think fuel. If it's thirty something, it's not fuel probably. Have you been using a good winter additive?
How strongly does the engine turn over when you engage the starter? Does it keep cranking strong and not fire, or what?
You can take ohm readings of each of those glow plugs and see if they're nearly equal or if one or two are near Mars.

Lots to search.

Glow plug light (the filament coils image ) goes off when they're at temperature. Some people cycle the ignition twice to really get the chamber hot.
