I'm driving myself nuts trying to fugure out what oil to use, I may be a victim of reading too much! I'm interested to see what others think. I have an Audi with a 1.8 Turbo and I have been using Amsoil 5-40 European oil and I think it's pretty good...the problem is when I order it I pay pretty steep shipping AND Taxes as they have dealers in my State. I do 5000 OCI. My question is is this really any better than Mobil 1 0w40. I know many like the GC Castrol but based on it's specs I'm not sure its any better than M1.

I do track events and my main concern is protection and engine cleanliness which is where I believe the Amsoil is better than M1. Thanks for any feedback.

I think your best bet would be to pm Tooslick; he's the man when it comes to which oil to use in your Audi, under your specified operating conditions.

FWIW, I run GC & M1 in my '00 VW GTI 1.8T & have been happy with both, but I don't do track events like you do.

Based on the oil data: AMSoil is almost identical at startup and normal operating temperatures as M1. Since you track the car, AMSoil has a higher HTHS number (4.2) than M1 (3.6) but neither is as high as RedLine 5W-40 (4.6).

I have used all three in my (tracked) Ferrari F355B. I found no performance difference in these oils with my OCI. I notice a 5 PSI decrease in the oil pressure after a day at the track with any of these oils that continues until a fresh batch of oil is used, at which time the pressure goes back to normal. At the last major service and with 3,000 track miles on the car, the insides are as clean as the day it left the factory--e.g. no varnish, sludge,...just clean aluminum surfaces.

Note that 1 day at the track will be as demanding on your oil as about 3000-5000 miles in more normal driving conditions. Therefore, I change my oil after 1 or 2 track days since the AW package is consumed. I don't leave for the track on oil that has more than 1000 miles on it.
