Need advice for turbo engine

Guys, I've been using Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w40 on my turbo charge Honda (aftermarket turbo) and have been very happy with it. With the recent re-labeling/out of stock issues, I'm wondering whether to just switch to regular Mobil 1 5w30 and be done with fancy oils. My current OCI is 3000 miles (the turbo is oil cooled so going more than that is not an option). The turbo generates a lot of heat so I need an oil that won't shear easily. I'm based in Northern Virginia now, so I do see me share of cold starts in the morning.

Any advice is appreciated.

I'm sure most of the popular synthies would work for you, including the Mobil 1 5w30 as well as GC 0w30 or even Pennzoil Platinum 5-30. Have you done any analysis to see how well the 5-40 was working?

No, I haven't done a used oil analysis yet. I figured that with a 40wt I'd be safe from shear. Add to that this is a 5w40, and I was covered for cold starts.

Does any one have used oil analysis of 5w30 vs 5w40?

The more spread you have in an oil, such as a 5-40 compared to a 5-30, the more likely it would be to shear, wouldn't it? Assuming you are comparing the same brand mineral oil, of course. I'd suggest Castrol 0-30 Syntec. German Green, if you can find it. It is on the thick side of 30 weight, almost a 40 weight, and it is reported to be surprisingly shear-resistant. Otherwise, I'd go with some other synthetic X-30 weight, as synthetics tend to be more shear-resistant.

I'd go with a 5w40. Four good 5w40's come to mind, rated in order of availability:

Shell Rotella T
Castrol Syntec
Valvoline Synpower
Havoline Synthetic

Any of these 4 will serve you & your turbo well, especially with 3k mile OCI's.

Why not use the Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5W30?

Use a real synthetic eg. Group IV or V basestock. Then you can't go wrong IMO.
