I have bought a couple of flip phones, as thats what i use. No problems if you shop carefully.

I'd be really careful about craigslist. Tell them to meet you inside a bank.

Try swappa.com instead of ebay. I would be hesitant to buy a used phone from ebay because of reported stolen ESN / IMEI / MEID numbers. Of course meeting at a phone store works if the seller is close to you.

Problem is that your IMEI can get blacklisted MONTHS later for non-payment of a previous phone bill. A guy at work has an iphone 5c that he transferred to Cricket from Verizon service, and it quit working after several months on Cricket due to he never paid his last bill on Verizon for $106. So Cricket store staff confirmed that his phone quit working because his IMEI got blacklisted for this reason. He went and paid his last Verizon bill, but now must wait another few months to get his IMEI ban lifted... He bought one of their cheaper android phones for the meantime.

I know reputable people that get phones in from unknown sources and will first test them out and just let them sit in inventory a few months before selling them, so that this does not happen to the people who buy their used phones.

I recently bought a 5s on eBay and one from Gazelle .com. Both were refurbs. Couldn't tell them from new.

For a day or two during the holidays, cricket.com had new iphone 5s for $80 with new line of service. They sold out in no time at that price! Now they are back up to $200.

Swappa looks great now that i look at it , thanks! BUT can i get screwed by the "blacklisting" if some unpaid bill of the original owner comes through a few months later?

I just bought 2 phones off Swappa (well, my kids did, they saved up their Christmas and birthday money). I got a 16 gig 5s for $134 (in fair condition) and a 64 gig 6 for $265 in almost new condition. Both transactions seem to be good, fair deals for what we paid and received.

I was a bit leary and did not want to do e-bay. Read a lot of good reviews about swappa and decided to give it a try. Sure it can be blacklisted later, just as any used phone. You have 180 protection with paypal (issue is addressed on Swappa's site). If you buy from a business seller it reduces the chance of it.

Never had an issue ... purchased (and sold) quite a few phones via swappa. I guess anything could happen, but they stand behind their transactions.
