Need a little input

Hi All,

Bought an 2001 Infiniti i30t with 67k and want to put a good oil in it that will protect and clean well. It was a one owner and well maintained vehicle. Which do you think would do the best job between Mobil 1 0w30, Pennzoil Ultra 5w30 or Q Horsepower 5w30? Feel free to offer up something I may have missed but these are the ones that stood out to me.

Also, is there any merit in adding a quart of MMO with the oil change or just leave the oil to do the work itself?

Might as well try the new Pennzoil Ultra - it's the new darling on here.

If you want to clean the engine a bit to get rid of possibly bad previous maintenenance habits, then I'd run a quart of MMO with a fill of cheap dino for 3k, and THEN change to a synthetic.

Whatever works for you - no rigorous data is available to make an "informed" choice. Skip the MMO when using a fake syn with high detergency.Hey - you didnt follow the, "what oil is best for my app" rules!

I probably wouldn't spring for the Ultra unless you think it was negelected (doubtful on one owner) or you want a long oci.

Really, any cheap syn for a few 5000/7500 mile OCI's is what I would start with as long as things appear clean. No MMO for me.

Well, I had purchased a 5 qt. jug of SuperTech Syn 5w30 and a qt. of MMO a week ago in case I wanted to do the 3k cleaning but then I wondered if a good oil like I listed above would be better. I do agree that most syn's would be fine for 5k OCI's and maybe the Ultra would not be worth the extra price. I believe the QPower would be the least expensive of the three and probably just as good for 5k so I will see what other feedback I get and go from there. Thank you all for the input so far.

Those VQ30DE motors run fine on a good 5w30. No need to get all fancy unless you want to, or have a specific OCI strategy.

Run a good oil, do a used oil analysis after 4-5k, see what the numbers and data looks like, and go from there.

Maybe do a AutoRX run if you want to clean the engine.

I'd go with Mobil 1 0w30 or Pennzoil Platinum/Q HP 10w30. Your Infiniti engine may like a little more viscosity than the other 2 5w30's will allow.

Good friend of mine drove his Infiniti J30 260,000 miles on nothing but pennzoil 10w30 changed every 3,000 miles. Car still ran fantastic when he sold it.

Since ultra supposedly cleans really well, Id give it a shot first, to see what happens. If nothing else, you put in an oil that should be quite good at cleaning. That may be peace of mind.

Then you can stay with it, or go to PP, M1, etc. You really cannot go wrong with any of them.

Thank you all for the awesome input and it has definitely given me something to consider. I am sure these are good engines and if I keep the oil changed every 5k it will probably go 300k.

MMo can be used in the engine oil, but it WILL thin it out. You may have to use thicker oil when using the MMO, esp in Arizona.
But MMO will help clean things internally.
Pennzoil Platinum and Ultra are god cleaning oils. I'd use them alone right now in your car.

It does not seem to need a lot of cleaning but I usually go extreme when getting a used vehicle in order to get as much of a fresh start as possible. I may just put the Ultra in it without the MMO and see how that feels for 5k.

Well, if I want to narrow it down between Mobil 1 0w30 or Ultra 5w30 is the Ultra better or would the 0w30 be better overall? My Infiniti calls for 5w30 so either grade is fine. I have heard good from both brands but the Mobil 1 is $5 cheaper.

I would think the 5W rather than the 0W would be fine in Arizona. I would like to run 0w30 M1, but nobody stocks it here.
