I have an 84 Toyota Pickup, I intend to have this truck a very long time. My previous Toyota went through 7 Walker mufflers and tail pipes in the 16 years I owned it. The replacement mufflers were free, but I got fed-up installing them, and buying new Tail pipes.
Does anyone know if there is a L-O-N-G life muffler available?
I'm looking for OEM type sound (I don't want a Glasspack)

I had an '88 Cougar with 300K+ miles. I got the first replacement muffler from Midas with a lifetime warranty and they put on new ones for free after that. If I remember right, the owner had to pay for some small replacement items, maybe muffler clamps, I don't exactly recall.
I got a little tired of them trying to sell everything else, but I just said no.

The muffler you want is what I have had on my El Camino for the last 10 years and it looks as good as the day I put it on the car, its a Dynomax Ultra Flow SS Stainless Steel Muffler, this muffler is made out of T-304 stainless steel and will last forever.

This muffler goes for about $110.00 but it is worth it, beware of mufflers that use T-409 stainless steel which is not as good as the T-304.

The muffler I talked about is your forever muffler.

I just paid $400 CDN and had the exhaust from the cat back replaced on my '89 Cabriolet and got stainless steel with stainless steel muffler.

The original lasted 20 years before it let go.

I intend on keeping this car and don't want to start the muffler/pipe 2 year replacement program so I went this route instead.

I would highly recommend finding a performance exhaust shop and get it done in stainless steel. Even if you only intend to keep the car for 5 years its still worth it IMO.

Go with a stainless muffler from Dynomax or Gibson. Expensive, but you won't be replacing it.

Even some aluminized mufflers should last a long time. I never saw any rust on my Dynomax Super Turbo muffler on my old truck. It was just aluminized steel, not stainless.

What I like about the Dynomax Ultra Flow SS is that it is very free flowing and not loud during cruising, also since it is free flowing my exhaust system looks almost perfect becuase that straight through muffler is blowing out any condensation which can lead too your exhaust pipes going bad unless you have a stainless steel exhaust.

Magnaflows are very popular but are they made out of T-409 or t-304 stainless steel. I know that Flowmaster has some new mufflers made out of T-409 stainless steel. I just feel it is worth spending a little more money for the T-304 stainless steel mufflers, that is what the Borla Mufflers are made out of and they have a 1 million mile warranty.

The Magnaflow ones have a "lifetime" warranty.

I think their polished mufflers are T-304, but the piping is T-409 (like OEM's use, doesn't stay pretty).

I would take this opportunity to have a muffler shop make you a 2" or 2 1/4" catback exhaust. Consult with them to find out which muffler will give you the best bang for the buck.

If you want a muffler consult with us here on BITOG, a muffler shop is going too try and sell you what they have.

So far one member is recommending a Magnaflow that seems to be T-304 stainless steel and I am recommending the Dynomax Ultra Flow SS which is made out of T-304 stainless steel too, pick either the Magnaflow or the Ultra Flow SS and you will have your FOREVER muffler.

Do you seriously think that a place like Midas or Meineke is going to sell you a stainless steel muffler that will last forever, I have never seen either place have an advertisement that said bring your car in and we will sell and install a Borla muffler that will last forever.

OVERKILL, I hope this guy takes either your advice or mine and either gets a Magnaflow or Dynomax Ultra Flow SS, he can't go wrong with either one.

I do think that the Magnaflow will have a more aggressive sound, the only way he can get something louder is too run a straight pipe.

It's the aggressive sound that I fear, I would like OEM sound levels. I also fear that a Glasspack style muffler will loose it's packing over time and get noisy.
Anybody know anything about Ansa stainless mufflers?

c3po is spot on with his alloy recommendations. 409ss is probably the cheapest stainless steel you can use, and it's not very potent against hot corrosion. 304ss is the best stainless you can use before getting into nickel-based or titanium alloy exhausts. It should last almost the life of the car.

One way to tell 409 from 304 is with a magnet. The magnet will attract 409, not 304.

Years ago, Ford paid me good money to study their exhaust systems. They insisted on using 409ss while their japanese counterparts were using 304ss.

"Now with the power of stainless steel"

I don't know how to interpret that... marketing hype?... to mislead?

If it was truly made of stainless steel, I would expect the manufacturer would categorically say so, especially under the bullet points. This merits contacting Walker for clarification.
