I've been looking at the Lorex HDIP86W, while this system was cheaper around Xmas, ...about $850 minus 25%, it's under different model numbers for other sales during the year. This is the current spring version.

Lorex 6-camera system

But basically it's 6 cameras with an 8-channel DVR, 2K 4MP cameras with decent night vision range....about 130'. Would really like to have white camera bodies.

That's about where I want to be, hopefully under $1K with 6 cameras, 1080P, 2K if poss, but reading the reviews from Dec last year to now..it sounds like the same song and dance for many customers.

Just curious if anyone has used this system or similar, or other systems you can recommend. Having the cameras wired is not an issue, wireless would be great but then it's a battery issue.

All input and criticism appreciated.

One thing to note about these packaged systems is that the cameras they include may not be the right one for your application. I would think that in some areas around your property, you may want a wide angle dome camera, while others might want a very tight field of view. I'd definitely stick with POE wired cameras, should be much more reliable than WiFi units (where you'd still need to connect to power).

If you haven't already, try map out exactly where you need to place your cameras and what type would be best suited for each location. For a similar price (and probably a little more work), you might be able to put together a system that would work better for you.

Do you want a "turn-key" kit or do you want to assemble your own system?

If you want to learn more about the whole CCTV system topic, here's a good starting point: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLD33F76872FF31FB2

If you want a link to purchase kits, individual supplies, etc., try this: http://www.cctvcamerapros.com/

If you want to see what free, software systems are available to manage a DIY systems, try these: http://www.yawcam.com/ - Yawcam is webcam software for Windows written in Java, and https://www.zoneminder.com/ - For Linux systems, ZoneMinder is a free video camera security application suite, designed for low cost DIY video security including commercial or home CCTV

Won't do you any good if your not home at the time "the intruder" decides to rob your house.

I have three properties with security cameras, and in each case I pieced together my own system using separate components.

I went with Vivotek for their PoE (Power Over Ethernet) IP network cameras, and am also using their free ST7501 video management software running on inexpensive Windows 7 PC's. A small NetGear PoE switch connects and powers the cameras at each building. The cabling is just standard ethernet network wiring.

The cameras are the most expensive components, and you get what you pay for so get the best you can afford. I prefer to use external security lighting at night to illuminate the areas that I'm covering (rather than having cameras with infrared sensors), but that is a personal preference.

These systems work great for my needs, and they have also helped our local police solve a couple of property crimes at my next door neighbor's building.

I've got a couple Foscam IP cameras recording to ispy monitoring software on my desktop computer, all in all it does what I need it to do. Mostly it just shows me the local trash trying to see if I locked my car doors at 3am. It's also helped bust some illegal mattress dumpers tossing a mattress in the dumpster at the apartment across from me.
