Nearly 50% of men who have never flown or landed an airplane think they could safely land a passenger airplane

Passengers should be armed IF certain criteria are met. They have to pass the FBI background check required to obtain a CHL. They have to train and have a minimum of 100 hours advanced range training with a minimum score of 90 percent. Then they will obtain an upgraded CHL that allows them to be armed while flying. They will dress in a manner that conceals their weapon at all times. They will not advise any passengers they are armed. IOW, they will be like the literally millions of people you come in contact with on a daily basis, armed without your having any clue. Perhaps if bad guys knew at any given moment there are many many many thousands of additional individuals trained and capable of eliminating them flying anywhere and everywhere, perhaps more than one on any given flight, they would decide to not fly.
The biggest issue is psychological, not shooting accurately or having a clean background check.

That would be part of it also in the non-abbreviated version I posted to generate discussion. Yes, not everyone would be accepted. But virtually all who are willing to pay thousands of dollars for 100 hours advanced training and an advanced background check are going to be acceptable.

I have a concealed carry permit. I myself do not want random Joe’s, regardless of training, carrying a concealed weapon on a flight. Leave that area to Federal Air Marshals.

You realize every air marshal is a random Joe who underwent training after the same background check I'd require for anyone wishing to obtain an airline carry permit?

That’s not nearly enough training, they’re going to hit innocent bystanders. The plane is crowded. Check out the marksmanship and training of FAMs.

Further, it provides a path for a “mole” to being a firearm onto a plane.

There needs to be a lot more rigor before allowing someone other than a sworn LEO to carry on a plane.

The plane itself is a WMD, as clearly proven by 9-11.

You cannot concealed carry as a civilian into a nuclear power plant, onto a military base, or anywhere else where one would have access to WMD.

There are already armed individuals on board many of our airplanes. They’re the FFDOs. They are far more common than FAMs. Sworn LEOs already carry on planes. No passenger is informed of any of those individuals. Perhaps that is why you think this need exists.

The deterrent level is high enough without opening up this can of worms.

I am submitting my application at United Arilines to be a pilot Monday. I watched a video how to land a plane.
You know what’s funny - is we have a shortage, are willing to train people, and we start pilots at about $100,000/year.

So, why aren’t more of these folks, who are convinced they could do it already, applying?

One isn't supposed to, but I've been to military bases for public events or even where the general public could enter. The Presidio of San Francisco was well known for entry without controlled entry when it was Sixth Army HQ. I think I went to a few base museums without being searched. And thousands of people at public air shows where metal detectors would have been difficult to set up. But at an airport they're obviously checking for weapons. Heck - I got caught with a Swiss Army knife when I was helping my in laws entering on a gate pass. In the 90s I had no issue taking a small blade past security.

Military base security has been lax at times, like that guy on meth who managed to drive into an F/A-18 at NAS Lemoore. California Highway Patrol still managed to drive onto the base in pursuit and a CHP helicopter flew over the base even though they contacted base security that advised them to not enter. So armed civilian law enforcement managed to end up on the base.

I have been fortunate to be able to spend time in in 747 cargo planes during coffee breaks and I will humbly say having the quiet time to ponder the level of skill needed. I probably would mess my pants by the time the chalks were removed at push back. No brag just fact.

Show me where they offer paid training. Most people can't stop working and go back to school unfortunately.

My wife and business partner would kill me? ;)

"Hey babe/bud, ehhh...so I was thinking I'd ehhh go to Florida for a year and learn to be a ehhhh pilot." would not end well for me.

Too many people with big egos claiming the can land a plane when I bet they can't even change their own oil!!! I can say I can because I got my private pilots license when I was 15yrs old.
