NASA readies Artemis II for a manned launch

That crawler moves at 1/3 MPH, but I forget how many gallons of diesel it uses per hour. The 3 mile trip to 39A will take 24 hrs.
Yes, this is a very exciting place to live sometimes.

They built a special road to handle all that weight, but it is gravel! not paved.

There is a fantastic NASA document on all of the engineering and building that it took to build all that swampland into all of the facilities that are here today.

Including an entire section on the crawler-transporter.

Waste of money
Separate topic

You asked why the moon mission was going to the moon.

If you would like to talk about the federal budget, let’s start with the data point that NASA takes 0.3% of the total federal budget. 1/3 of 1%

3 parts per thousand.

There are other sectors of the budget, the other 99.7% of it, that could stand some trimming.

Gotta start somewhere . Billions ain't no joke .

Yeah, it is a joke.
Sorry I dont agree.
The billions spend decades ago in the space race, the landing on the moon, GREATLY advanced the technology in the USA including the discovery of materials across all spectrums has made us the most powerful nation on earth.
The problem is we stopped after the shuttle disaster decades ago. THE NATION with the technology wins in keeping their people safe. Those who rule technology wise in space keeps its people safe. We stopped this adventure way too long ago, it's time we go full force back into it. We should have been to MARS already, we have space craft built in the 1970's two of them now outside our solar system in interstellar space still sending back signals. No other nation has done that but we are losing our edge as China is going full force into it.
It's time to get back on the saddle.

It will be from space that missiles and rockets mean't to do harm to our nation will be able to be stopped. We dont spend nearly enough in this area but things MAYBE looking up.

Why does NASA have their own jets? What do they use them for? Sorry for the detour.
I think the space program should be funded, as it advances technology in so many areas.
Chase plane (safety role) in test flight (NASA is more than rockets).

Airspeed and other calibrations on test aircraft, again flown by test pilots.

Pilot proficiency when they’re flown by pilot astronauts, who were all test pilots.

The jets in this photo are T-38s, a 1960s jet, and they’ve been in NASA hands, in a variety of supporting roles, for over 60 years.

But NASA has lots of others, for aerodynamic and atmospheric research, here are some of those missions and aircraft.
