Napa Silver 31085 cut open

This Napa Silver filter was in use for 3500 miles on my Jeep. After cutting this open, I have to say I think this is one of the best filters for the money ($3.03). This filter is probably one of the only filters I have cut open that seemed to never drain out. I must've dumped out the oil a few times and when I cut it open it was still full of oil. My Jeep is fairly picky with filters, and many of them give me start-up noise. I didn't have start-up noise once with this filter. I used this filter from the end of winter until today, so it has been through a wide variety of temperatures.

The combo valve seemed to do its job well. It was flexible, but also felt sturdy. I think for $3 I'm going to use these from now on after my current oil change interval.

I can't say enough good things about those Silvers on my Jeep either. The best starts I've ever had, even at 10 below. Like you it took forever to get the oil out of mine it just kept holding and holding it. Great Wix quality of construction all for 3 bucks you can't beat 'em IMO.

My next one to run is the Silver #31515 oversize but I'd be surprised if it is any different other than capacity.

My guess is the 31515 does not have the combo valve, but has the same upfront bypass vale and ADBV as the NAPA GOLD 1515.

Nope the #31515 does have the combo, which is why I bought it. The combo valve has turned out to be one of the best features of the Silvers for me, they work great on my Jeep (and others too). The fancy Gold thread end bypass version doesn't work for me, but the combo one does. For whatever reason the combo valve holds the oil in the top of my engine better than ANY filter I've tried, and that is a lot of filters many that cost more than double the Silver.

Not all Silvers use the combo valve though, as you mentioned.

Check out ebay seller. shelor_motormile and search "51085 12 filter".pretty sure the auto extra filters are wix/napa silvers...
25.99/case to your door....I bought bunch of 51372's , 51516's and 51348's couple months ago....super fast shipping..

They're not, in fact they are unusually stiff nitrile from what I can tell. May be why it holds the oil so well. The spring tension is higher than most filters as well, making for quite the stout ADBV. Just the ticket for start fussy vehicles.

I think those are the regular Wix filters though. The Napa Silvers have the 31085 part number.

Correct. as stated above. Napa Silver uses Nitrile. if you want Silicon, get the Napa Gold, Regular Wix, carquest premium (blue), etc.
 
I am running a Silver now. The oil light appears to go out a little quicker than the Gold one I just replaced. Great value, don't understand why the Silvers are always cheaper than the Pro Select when they are supposed to be a step up.

Yes, the 51516 appears to have/use Wix's traditional metal thread end bypass and separate adbv. That is my preference for Wix construction as opposed to the nitrile combo valve, which is strictly done as a cost saving measure and none other. Otherwise Wix would use it in their Wix/Napa Gold 'automotive application' filters. They don't.

A nitrile(rubber) adbv is also used for cost saving/value reasons too, but it's only function is to prevent drainback, not also control bypass opening psi. Big difference imo.

That said, this one looks like it held up fine and did it's job.

Ohh I see now, that is an Auto Extra part number not a Wix part number, because the Wix filters starting with "5" have the Silicone valve.
