NAPA Pro Select filter

I bought a new Chevy Impala LS last November and would like to put at least 200,000 miles on it. I will never gun the engine (such as it is) or drive faster than 75. I warm it up slowly, even though it's summer in Texas. My wife has the Thunderbird. All I want is efficient transportation...for a long time.

I had the oil changed for the second time last week at 3300 miles with Castrol GTX 5w30 and will change it at 3,000 miles/three months for the forseeable future.

I asked for the NAPA Gold filter, but the mechanic put on the NAPA Pro Select filter and told me it's just as good, which must be remarkable since one costs $7 and the other costs $3.

The NAPA store is next to my mechanic's station, and I read the labeling on both filters. NAPA says the warranty on a new car will stay in effect with use of the Pro Select, even though it doesn't have a "glass-enhanced media" or a silicon ADBValve.

Will the NAPA Pro Select get me to 200,000 miles?

Use it with confidence. Next time hammer the mechanic for the NAPA Gold. It's not as good a filter (the Pro Select), but that doesn't mean that it doesn't do a decent job. When he protests and says that it's just as good, tell him you don't care. Say you've got a thing for "gold" and just feel better about it. Convince him that you're defective and don't attempt to prove to him that the Wix/NAPA Gold is better. Make him think that the distinction is only in your mind. That way, he'll stop trying to protect you from yourself seeing that it's a lost cause.

If he ignores you a second time ..tell him you need to go elsewhere. He obviously doesn't care what you have to say.

Not if you are trying to make it on one filter.

Seriously though, you are probably planning on more than is needed. You should be able to easily get 200,000 miles with Fram filters (read that as junk) if they are changed every 3,000 miles.

I believe in aggressive maintenance. With today's oils, changing the oil and filter every 5,000 miles is aggressive. Today's oils are much better than they were a few years ago and will easily go further then oils of a few years ago.

The filter he used is more than good enough unless you want to go much longer between changes. As to if you would be better off with the filter you have in mind, I'll encourage others to chime in.

hamhorn, how many miles do you put on in a year? You can probably break out of the 3m/3k prison ..and, barring any unforeseen circumstances, and if you're young enough, you'll reach your 200k mark with plenty of equity still in the engine. The rest of the car

..but the engine? Sure.

A Pro Select would probably be my choice too under the 3k/3m limitation if given the choice ONLY between it and a Napa Gold. If you're going to get limited mileage out of a filter, no sense in paying for the best offering.

Depending on your mileage accumulation profile, you could probably use a NAPA Gold for two OCI's or one year, which ever comes first. That would also dictate your mileage for the oil change. Most users can get to 6 months easy enough with todays oils. If it ends up being a lot of miles in 6 months ..they go to a synth. It all depends on what you perceive as a long drain.

3m/3k is only for the most severe service, imo.

Thanks for the advice, Gary and BigJim. I'm 60 and probably will not put more than 10-12,000 miles per year on my Impala.

Yeah, I did the math, too, and I believe I can make it to 80 years old. I drink too much beer, but I jog a lot.

I suspect a lot of guys my age who bought their first car in the '50's or '60's have trouble with the fact that today even a great oil can go further than 3k/3m.

Good advice, or, tell him he's welcome to put the better oil filter on your car, but you're still only going to pay $3 for it no matter which one he uses...

The temperature here in Houston, as I recall, didn't go below 30 degrees last winter. Goes below 20 about every 15 or 20 years.

200K is nothing these days. That filter brand and model - changed every 4K - not 3K, may get you to 300K - not 200K.

You are miles ahead of your schedule. Just take care of the rest of the Impala.

You are using WIX when you use the NAPA proselect, I believe you should buy your own Napa Gold and make em install it I know they are really good... you can't go wrong with either filter but you sound like a guy who wants to baby his ride... so you know what BABY HER!!!! You need to satisfied not the guy installing your oil. I sleep better at night when I use the best...
