Now that I think about it, I have to wonder... the previous OCI did have a can of Ceratec... wondering if this is some fallout from that?

Also, to the bypass comment- this filter is over 1" longer than the "spec" filter, plus the XP media allegedly flows quite a bit more than paper, plus this was 0W20 so I doubt it lifted the bypass very frequently, if at all.

I can't wait to see what my WIX XP oil filter will look like when I C&P it. I hope I don't have as much junk in it as this oil filter.

I've regularly run "normal" filters similar distances, and had them come out looking almost like new---no gunk like that at all, and nothing else visible to the naked eye except a few tiny black (carbon?) specks. I'm curious what the gunk is.

Subie you are right. Don't run the MG over 10k. That is their limit.
I've ran many out to 10k with absolutely no issues but after that they ain't no Fram Ultra!

If filter cutting is the tell all then I think you shouldn't use anything but motor oil.
No additives at all. Like you I have had really clean filters out to 24k.
But I don't use additives.

OMG! Seriously? You have me laughing so hard! Me run an oil filter over 7.5K miles? That will happen about the same as me using it for 2 OCI's. NEVER!

Great job Subie and 51. Love to see an oil that's been run long and hard plus no make up. No playin it safe! Looks like lots of Moly and zinc still left over too. Was never a big fan of Pennzoil but that PUP seems to have really hung in there. Thanks for both of your efforts.

I checked my oil the other day. It has less than 1K miles on the current oil change. The oil is very dark on the dipstick. Am I to think it's this way because it's cleaning? If it keeps getting darker, which I'm sure it will, I will be changing it at 3K miles.
I quoted this reply because I am using a WIX XP oil filter with Pennzoil Platinum Euro 0w40 oil. Sure, it's not PUP, but I read somewhere on here at BITOG that the Pennzoil Platinum Euro is equivalent in cleaning to the PUP. Is this correct? I really don't think the inside of my engine is very dirty. I have NEVER let an oil change go over 7.5K miles. 85% or better of my OCI's were at least 5K miles. About 10%, or less, of my OCI's were with a conventional oil. How well does Castrol 0W40 clean the internal engine?

Zee, I'd say yes, to a small extent. The numbers are below; distances from L-R are: 17,150; 13,600; 12,000; 11,950; 12,350; 9,640.



Looking at the viscosities and TBN, I think everything would look just hunky-dory at 15k. Notice that even with the crud in the can, insolubles is still 0.2, so it looks like the filter did perform pretty admirably.
 
Filter looks fine, excellent even at ~17k miles imo. Don't know about anything else regarding a subjective visual appearance of oil and any speculated correlation to what might or might not show up in the pleats. Don't see any science to that. Perhaps some confirmation bias to some, but not me.

As for any standard UOA correlation, Blackstone said long ago and it posted on this sub forum that they find no significant difference in any filter used in their testing.

Iron is 18ppm at 17+K miles, that is outstanding (approx 1ppm per 1K miles)

Insoluables at 0.2... can't argue with that, either!
