From member SubyRubieRoo and off his 2011 Ford Fusion that had Pennzoil Ultra Platium 0w20 in sump. Dunno what happened but it doesn't look nice

PUP oil doing some cleaning? What oil has this car ran in the past? Thanks for the C&P.

I would say it did EXACTLY what it was designed to do....

......filter the junk out of the engine's oil. Well done.

You saying it's PUP goo?

Filter does look very good. Oil... Looks a bit rough. But visible looks can be very misleading to what condition the oil is in.

Great job again wild man. Hope you have had a good day today.

Filter looks in great condition... not sure I would want a paper filter in this scenario!

It would be interesting to know the oil change history for this car. Definitely something going on with the debris.

Car has had 7 OCI over the 100k that I've owned it, varying in mileage from 7.6k all the way up to 17.2k on this OCI. Pre-20k OCIs and fill were unknown, car was bought off a lease return with 19k. First two of my OCI were PP (pre-GTL), then PUP (gray bottle) for two more, then one OCI of Mobil 1 5w20, then two more of PUP (yellow bottle). This was the first OCI that showed some thickening, but it was also probably the hardest OCI since I've owned it- I regularly take it to redline once warmed up, and also put about 9k miles in two months on it, then dropped back off to around maybe 2500 per month? Under the valvecover looks great, I haven't pulled it yet but what I can see through the fill hole looks very clean, no sludge. This OCI did have at least 2 bottles of Gumout AIO run through it, but no additives to the PUP.

After this OCI, and obviously before I saw these, I have started using exclusively Marathon or Shell gas; partially because they are Top Tier, but more for the perks those stations offer. Current OCI is on a MicroGreen 301-1 at about 7.5k right now, so we will get to see if it catches a bunch of [censored], but I will likely change it at 10k. As far as used oil analysis go, I have them all posted on the board. This filter/OCI had 18ppm Fe over 17.2k miles, and all other wear metals were at or below universal averages at 7,150 miles. I wouldn't say I'm "thrilled" with what this looks like, but like Linc said, the filter definitely looks like it did its job. I plan to pull the VC sometime this year once summer finally decides to get here!

UOA from this filter:

Most of the debris in that filter appears to be at the top end of the housing up near the base plate. I would guess that bypass valve is at this end. Does this mean that when the filter goes into bypass a lot of this crud is pushed through the engine? Not criticising anything here just observing.
Excellent photos!

The 41516 has a dome end bypass, in distinct opposition to the 1516. The 4xxx denotes the Wix XP vs. Gold; the Gold does have thread-end bypass. I'm not really sure where all the "stuff" came from; the oil was getting dark on the dipstick, but this OCI, like every other one I've had on this car, did not get one drop of makeup oil... so this 5.3 quarts was along for the ride for 10 months 16 days and 17,150 miles. If I was close enough to get the gunk back from Adam, I may have sent it for analysis to see what it is. We have a work account with a lab that has an SEDX microscope and can provide particle composition. That filter also sat in the garage for 5.5 months before cutting it open, so I don't know if that could affect what we see today as far as particulates?

No defending the "disliked" Wix XP/NAPA Platinum here, it is what it is... but it does give pause to those who run normal filters for 2 or 3 OCIs...
