I'm not sure what this filters problem is but I don't like it.

Got moisture or coolant in your oil? Wavy pleats can be from that. These are not "collapsed", but just "wavy".

You'll see that it's kinked in the middle (it has a waist-line now). I think there is a gap between the media and the center-tube and the pressure crunched it. The media is very stiff, not like the other filters.

It was sealed inside the can, no way you could have caused that. Any flickering oil lights or noticeable loss of oil pressure?

I cut 13 Pro Selects open over about a 2 year period (none of them were mine) with a purpose built OF cutter.

11 of the 13 had media failures that included collapsed or torn media. Don't use them-they are junk. I've cut countless Napa Golds open over the years and have never found a problem.

Looks like a manufacturing defect of some kind. Is this a Wix? I bought 2 Wix`s one time that looked like they had smushed media (viewed through the holes in the center core),and my last Wix leaked via the gasket. No more Wix filters for me.

Another quality product from china worth every penny I see. NAPA's parts quality has really gone down hill.

No unusual indications and the bypass seems to be OK. I'll do a tear-down on these later on.

Wix has been using Chinese-, Korean-, and Mexican-made filters for quite some time.

I guess I'm having a difficult time thinking how the media 'collapsed' like that when the center tube is solid; wouldn't the center tube had to have crushed as well for the media to end up like that? Or am I not thinking this correctly? As another had mentioned above, if the media was too long when the assembly was put together that would make more visual sense to me. I suppose I'd have to see a dry one cut open to come to a better conclusion.

Yes, and yes.

These are wavy pleats, possibly from water or coolant. Not a good sign but not a true "failure" either unless you find a place where the media is breached. I have asked some of the filter professional I have on tap and they aren't overly concerned over wavy pleats in and of itself but it can be a bad sign.. the first being of excessive moisture. Resins are what hold a cellulose media into a form and if cheap resins are used, or not enough of them, you can get wavy pleats. Moisture also breaks them down. I see this as a sign of a low quality filter overall.

This isn't typical wavy-media like I've seen before. It's rigid material that is kinked and that leads me to believe it has torn.
