I have been anxiously waiting for time to cut this one open since I pulled it off. Looking down the barrel I saw some sludge and was wondering what id find on the other side. I found some sludge, but nothing like I thought it might be.

This was on my 83k20 plow truck. Saw about a year long service with Trop-Artic 5w30 plus a can of seafoam in the crankcase.

All in all, rather unremarkable.

No ADBV and no bypass.

Figured the sludge on the inside of the filter must have washed down when I poked the hole in the bottom to let it drain. The Flow must have washed some down from the block above.

Let there be no doubt that seafoam in the oil works!

No tears and wavy pleats due to the cold starts, or so I would assume.

That filter does not have bypass. The spring is to keep pressure pushing down between the inside of the top case and the media cap.

How much use did this plow truck get? I am guessing a lot of idling and slow speeds. Do you think it even had 3k on the oil?

Looks like the oil and Sea Foam did its job.

I don't think I've put 3,000 miles on the truck in all the years I've had it.

A big year is 300 miles. Its mostly a yard truck and only sees the road to get gas and help a neighbor. Although on this oci it did take 4,000 lbs of rubble to the landfill.

If I had to guess, id say it was about 300 miles and maybe 100 gallons of gas, but I never purposely kept track of fuel. New goal for 2016.

Wix makes great filters i also like all those large oil holes unlike the new purolaters i have seen with those tiny barely open slits...WOW..

I was referencing the amount of sludge found in the filter. The last filter I cut open from this truck did not have the chunks found in it like this filter did.
Old Supertech cutaway

Also based on the relatively clean internals when I took the valve covers off to replace the gaskets.
Judging a truck by its (valve) cover

Adding seafoam to the crankcase is one of the uses listed on the bottle. Supposed to be used at a rate of 1.0 - 1.5 oz/Qt of oil.

I added the whole bottle in an attempt to free up a stuck ring, assuming that it had a stuck ring (which it appears not to since the seafoam didn't help the issue).

Seafoam is a perfect way to free up a stuck lifter, in my experiences. If you've got a sticky/noisey lifter -- a bottle of seafoam and a 300 mile drive will usually fix it for good -- assuming it is just varnish.
