N.J. Gov.'s SUV Went 91 Mph Before Crash

That's about where factory rev limiter is set to govern (no pun intended) max speed. You guys suppose limit had been modified and driver chose that speed, or limit was working and he had his foot in it and that's all she'd do?

Bob

It would presumably have tires appropriate to the speed as well, but these are really irrelevant questions. The real question is why they were driving like that in the first place? Irrespective of party affiliation, I really wonder what justifies a governer tooling about at ~25 mph above the posted limit. I mean, what's the emergency? Gosh, I've got to get somewhere and ... govern??? An ambulance with a critical patient, sure. A governeror's Suburban -- ridiculous. I wonder what would have happened to an average Joe caught doing this speed in the same place? Silly question, of course. NOTE: this is NOT meant as a political comment; both parties "leaders" are guilty of such arrogant foolishness.

I heard on the news someone in LE was planning to issue the governor a ticket for not wearing a belt. Good. Give him one for speeding too, since he was undoubtedly the "captain of the ship" and is responsible for that too.

I think he's already been tried and sentenced by a greater justice.

Undoubtedly. Now let him face the justice that the rest of us would also face were we in the same situation.

He should be removed from office in my opinion. It shows disregard to the duly enacted laws that he is sworn to uphold. What does all this say about him? He is not fit to govern.

Our Pa. Mayor was also speediong with the light flashing and a State Cop driving.

The news story says the SUV's emergency lights were on, so I think it's safe to assume it has Chevy's 9C1 (or whatever they're calling it now) SEO package. I'm not sure if the Tahoe's speed limiter would be increased as it's not really a pursuit vehicle, but Chevy's 9C1 packages are supposed to have a sturdier frame. That extra reinforcement could very well have saved the governor's life.

I'm just wondering why they would have the emergency lights on and be speeding that much.

They tried to make it sound like another driver was at fault. But so far they have brought no charges against that driver.

The facts are the governor was having his driver speed and the governor himself was not wearing a seat belt. Now if they had emergency lights on other drivers should have moved to the side of the road. But with somebody coming behind you at 91 mph you might not have time to move out of the way. And did the event the governor was going to justify the use of emergency lights? I think he was on the way to the meeting between Imus and the basketball team. Is this an emergency situation?

And even if you can justify the speed he was going at, what about his not wearing a seat belt? That is the law, is it not? Or is the governor above the law?

I personally know of a few things myself. I heard a story about a sheriff who told his deputy driver to get him home within a certain period of time from Las Vegas. And the driver had to speed to do this. Are political figures and law enforcement people above the law?

I am sorry that the governor got injured so badly but this accident probably never would have happened if the governor had not had his driver speeding and if the governor had been wearing a seat belt. In the very least, the seat belt would have reduced the injuries.

the previous red governess of a few years ago was routinely clocked at such speeds in her convoy.

Its a state police driver that moves them around. They may not even know (not an excuse) how fast theyre going at, they just command to get them where theyre going ASAP.

Just like funerals and ambulances, some vehicles have the right of way and right to do things they want. People probably dont think it odd to have to reroute all flights away from the path of air force one, so it is getting special treatment. How is that different?

The reality is that all that is claimed and preached is just a front. Just more hypocrasy. Really its a shame.

But there are limits to the power of the trooper & all government power. They have to have a real reason for using their lights/siren to move people out of the way so they can do as they please. It is not like funerals/ambulances.

It's hard to generate any sympathy. The governor was rushing to get his face in front of the media at the Imus flogging roadshow. Was it that important to the voters? You don't want to see anyone get hurt, but heck, what a fool.

He was going way too fast, not wearing a seat belt and now has injuries far worse than the belted driver who walked away from the crash (and lied about it!).

This is in the limelight so they'll have a difficult time trying to whitewash it totally. The "other driver is at fault" lie soon fell apart. I don't know, but standard procedure will be something like suspend the drivers license and he'll be off the force at least while his license is suspended. Nothing at all like a civilian would be facing, but that's to be expected. In these kinds of stories you often hear it's the innocent driver that gets killed or badly hurt. This time at least that didn't happen.

The governors punishment? A seat belt violation may be all there is. Hopefully this incident isn't forgotten when the voters next go into the booth to select their next governor. Not that the alternative choices will necessarily be anything to write home about. After all, this is New Jersey where corrupt politicians are hardly in short supply.

I agree...and honestly where is the outrage??? We simply have been manipulated into bizarre priorities.

The Gov. wasn't breaking any laws. The driver was, though. Back seat passengers aren't required to wear a seat belt.

Another thing is he would have to be tried and convicted of something first. Was he clocked or paced by an officer and receive a summons for speeding? My opinion is that he should have been wearing a seat belt and his driver should have been going the speed limit, but the Governor didn't do anything wrong. The Gov. may have not even known the driver was speeding. Not his responsibility to babysit the driver.

CC: That's not really correct. There are plenty of situations in which someone with "order giving" authority over another will be held legally acountable for the actions of a subordinate, just as if the he had done the deed himself. This may be true in some cases in which the higher authority merely allows the subordinate to break the law if it appears he gave tacit approval. It's even clearer if he gave the subordinate a direct order to break the law.

You do realize, I hope, that if they'd been driving a Toyota Sequoia, the gov would have walked away without a scratch. J/K, of course -- I just had to say that...
