Merkur 47C Long Handled Safety Razor

Anyone buy one? It is 48$ CDN on Amazon.ca.

I have the Merkur 33C with safety bar as my first DE razor.

I love the shaves it gives, but the handle is too thin and short.

I will keep it as a travel razor, maybe leave it at work. We have nice bathrooms at work so if I am early I can shave up a storm to avoid traffic but still have time for a nice shave.

I use the slant bar. Best shave ever. People fear it for the same reason people use/don't use products on BITOG, fear mongering and parroted, scripted responses.

I learned safety razor shaving with a GEM single edge open comb. That is not a razor for those who faint at the sight of blood. After that, shaving with the slant bar is a cinch.

I like the idea of the cutting prowess of a slant, but my beard is medium.

Also, my character is more orthogonal, and I like my sideburns to be very square.

My major trouble area is right lower neck and chin face.

I have a prominent chin that gets a weeper maybe 25% of the time, I don't want to throw a slant into the mix.

I am now looking for a very good hemp croapa.

I really wish Proraso would make a hemp infused shave soap that is as well done as their Sandalwood.

Any suggestions? BTW I live in Canada, so hemp scented products may be less popular but I don't mind smelling like hemp a bit, the scent I absolutely adore.

30+ year old Gillette Trac II. Works great. Haven't seen blood in years. Only problem is Gillette will probably stop making blades for this antique one of these years. The knock-off blades are all pos.

HosteenJorje, I know the Trac II well.

The first razor that I found really cool was when they first released the Gillette Sensor Excel.

My brother got piles of them when we were younger (he was shaving I wasn't yet).

Our Uncle was a salesman for a shipping company and one of his clients gave him CASES of Sensor Excels and really nice Gilette aftershave gels in little plastic siver-grey colored bottles.

It had a set of 5 cartridges that snapped into the back of the razor holder that had a mirror on it.

The razor itself was some sort of casted metal that had some molded rubber ribbing inset into the handle.

We fell in love with those razors, they had heft and were very well made.

But if I recall, the cartridges were horribly expensive. After using the five blade cartriges he would toss the free razor into a drawer and grab a new one for the 5 cartridges.

I remember seeing them in stores later on... The best deal was to buy the handle with the 5 cartridges, later to be a 5+1, then I believe they went to vibration handles with a battery.

All the new disposable razors look like junk compared to the Trac II and the Sensor Excel handles.

I mean 5 blades in a cartridge?? So the first blade gets dull and tugs... Dumb idea lol. 2 blades per cartridge head makes more sense to me.

My Merkur is a long-handled model -- I don't know the number, and for some reason it's not on the box. The owner of the site where I bought it suggested the long-handled type as being a good model for people used to the multi-blade cartridge razors. Personna red blades, Aveeno or Gillette shave gel, and I'm all set.

I really wasn't sure if I'd like DE shaving so I went for the Merkur 33C. It was only 22$ on Amazon at the time and has gone up in price since then that the Merkur 23C Long Handled is the much better deal now.

But, looking at the 33C I probably would have wanted it as a travel razor at some point anyway so no loss at all, and it shaves great. Tiny handle though.

What is nice is now I have two 3 piece razors, so the handles are interchangeable if one starts to shed it's chrome as I like to shave with Williams and juices (orange, lemon, lime, strawberry, coconut is the next I'll try) so the finish may take a beating.

If you add juice instead of water to your shaving mug, rinse the rasor well in hot water and dip the head in baby oil.

I always dunk the handle in baby oil in the thread area when changing blades to keep soaps and citric acid from adding wear to the rasor.

I posted this a few weeks back.

As I said, this is my first Double Edge Razor, so it has taken a little getting used to. But have to admit I like it very much.

The handle does feel a little short, but I think I might just turn a replacement from some Aluminium rod.
It's a 3 part razor so that should be easy.

The Rapira Platnum Lux blades are fantastic (compared to what I have been used to) I get 5 good shaves per blade.

Have not yet gone back to a Soap Mug, but I guess that will be next.

I'm getting to like shaving again.
A good thing, My 'Miami Vice' 3 day growth look was getting a bit old.

As long as you don't wear socks in your deck shoes the 3-day beard is alright.

But it will be hard to part with my White suit and Neon shirts.

So my 47C arrived today, picked it up from the Post Office.

Went for a car wash and opened the box while waiting in line.

Well, I couldn't believe it. I ordered the Merkur 47C along with another Omega Syntex to have as a spare, and everything in the box was smashed.

The Omega brush box was crushed, and the Merkur box was opened and crushed.

What was crazy was the safety bar was jammed together with the top section and the HANDLE WAS MISSING.

To top it all off, the free Merkur DE Blade that comes with each new razor actually wasn't lost!???

But the handle was GONE.

So I filed a claim with Amazon and have to use their printout shipping labels and send it all back.

This is the 3rd time I had trouble with Amazon.

1st time was for ski pants I ordered that were supposed to be black and I got Kahki.

I didn't bother sending it back, I figured I'd just learn to like Kahki I guess.

2nd time a shaving order was flat out stolen from in front of my door, but Amazon was great and just resent the order free of charge.

This time I'm very skittish about ordering anymore from Amazon. I get dreaded feelings now cause the shipping is just [censored].

The 47C is coming by Friday so I hope it isn't scrapped as well.

I don't get it because the exterior fold box was in good shape.

I think once this order goes through with Amazon I am giving up online shopping for a long time.

Maybe I'm just tired in general. Oh well, I'll keep you guys posted how it works out with Amazon.

You guys have any shipping problems with Amazon? This is two for two now, I think I give up.
