Just dealt with Maggard as recommended by this site, and man am I pleased.

I got the razor with the pot metal head (was expecting it to be a throwaway as I am ordering a Wolfman head) and this is a really fine DE Safety razor.

Held a magnet to the handle, and yes, she's Stainless Steel all right!

The handle is awesome, you could shave with vaseline and you wouldn't drop your razor, really.

Haven't shaved with it yet, but the blade exposure is quite even, I got pretty lucky.

Will update this post with a quick shave review when I have a chance.

If you are to only buy ONE razor, so far the Maggard MR6 for 20$ looks like it, and it has a Stainless Steel deeply knurled handle.

My current rotation is Merkur 33C and 47C, and now a Maggard MR6.

Once I receive the Wolfman SS head I am not buying any more razors as I satisfied all my needs.

It came to 40$ to get it in Montreal. The exchange rate and the Shipping Fee does it! And it was sent USPS, took a week, and absolutely no Brokerage Fees.

And, it came in a very solid box and wrapped with a ton of newspaper and put in a ziploc bag.

This is an A+ razor for the price, a steal if you live near the store and can avoid shipping charges!

Feels heavy and great in the hand, was exactly what I was looking for.

I think Maggard razors have great quality, especially for the money. Before the Maggard Razors MR18C Titanium Anodized razor sold out, I bought one. Its the only razor I use now. Love it. Great purchase choice, it'll last you quite possibly the rest of your life. Cheers

I know they got that new store front, wish I live closer, I'd go visit them.

Hotwheels, I have three DE razors now. Merkur 33C, 47C, and the MR6.

Just had a quick night shave with it. Washed my face with hot water and used Proraso Sandalwood red tub.

This razor is MUCH less aggressive than my two Merkurs by far.

I wasn't careful and only knocked off an ingrown hair bump, which would have happened anyway.

Handled my right neck and chin far better than the Merkur classic heads.

Was thinking of putting the Stainless handle on my 33C and putting the Maggard head on the short 33C handle to use as a travel razor.

But, until I get the Stainless Wolfman head, I plan on using the MR6 with the head it came with as my #1 razor, only using the 47C as backup if the blade is dull in the MR6.

When I am lathered up I don't care to change blades on a 3 piece, so the 47C is what I will use.

Overall, excellent razor. I recommend it if you are a new DE shaver with limited funds.

Had I got the MR6 with what I know now, I would have not bought my two Merkur razors.

I highly recommend it!!

The Wolfman head looks great, very nicely designed, engineered and executed - as it should be in that price class.

I've been ogling a Merkur Futur, because I like adjustable razors, but it's a tad chunky. The Wolfman makes me reconsider getting a non-adjustable instead.

The Wolfman razors look super fancy. Is there a reason why you are going to use a wolfman head, even though the MR6 head is working great for you?

Lillikai, the reason for the Wolfman razor is it is 125$ CDN, and that includes the shipping and the taxes.

So it is a 100$ razor head that is milled Stainless Steel.

The problem with Chrome Plated Zinc razors is they are actually very pricey for what they are, and once soaps and hard water starts to make the plating peel they are scrap.

Then you have to buy another pot metal razor. Getting a milled head means you never have to buy another razor again, but you have to be sure of what you are buying that is why most people have roughly 3-4 DE razors.

My Merkur 47C is all pot metal. It was 48$ before tax!

So stainless is the way to go if you know the model suits how heavy your beard is, mine is medium.

Oh glad I asked, I didn't know about that! I keep my razor head pretty clean, but I'm going to look into the stainless steel options. Thanks for the info!

Whatever you say, I'm into year 4 with my Lord razor made of pot metal, paid 15 bucks for it. Use it daily. Yet to see any plating pealing off anywhere.

My DE razors are decades old, my oldest one was made in '64, and the plating is still good. If it were peeling, I'd have the razor completely refurbished, which includes new plating.

If Gillette were to make a SS version of their old TTO De razors, I'd pay as much as $200 for one. Made from 316 stainless steel, it would be a beautiful tool.

I agree fully jcwit,

If you plan on buying a pot metal razor, you should get a cheap one.

How would you compare the Lord you posted to the 20$ Maggard MR6 with a Stainless handle?

I was blown away by the Maggard!

I do feel that Merkur is over priced for the materials used.

If you compare the value of a "Quality" pot metal razor to a Canadian made (Wolfman) or a US Made (Above the Tie, Weber) Stainless Steel, Machined DE razor, there isn't that much of a price difference.

A Weber (always sold out) go for 80$ a piece including the handle.

I like the blade retention geometry and how thin the Wolfman is, and that it is Canadian made. I dealt with the guy directly who designed and machined the razor in Alberta.

Plated Zinc is very hit and miss, I have read many reports of plating peeling even on Edwin Jagger.

I would pick an 80$ Weber over a Merkur of any price any day of the week, and gladly pay the 40$ price difference.

Hotwheels, are they plated Zinc or plated brass?

I think Zinc is very reactive. Brass on an old razor as the base metal I think is sturdier.

Once the Zinc is exposed it flakes faster than a brass razor.

There isn't much element of luck with a Stainless razor.

Mild care and it will last forever, provided you don't drop it!!

Since my razors have no bald spots I can't confirm the base material, but having seen pictures of Gillette TTOs with worn off plating, it looked like brass. Zinc certainly may corrode badly, especially if the quality of the alloy is low. See zinc pest that may afflict, for example, cheap cast metal toy cars.

Below an interesting video about how a TTO Merkur razor is manufactured.

I wanted an Above the Tie, but I find the head very bulky is why I went for a Wolfman.

If I ever stumble across the Weber site where they have the heads in stock and not just the handles I may purchase one.

Wolfman is a new razor maker, so I hope I got in early enough to be able to get my hands on one.

LOL, What a post, I collect razors as a hobby, I own 8 Gillette Fat Boys, 7 complete with case, 2 complete with case and papers, Yes I own a Weber, bought it shortly after they came out. My total collection is in the 3 figures.

With all that I daily use razors are the Lord L6 or a all plastic Weishi, just my personal preference.

Will have to look into the Wolfman.

Eh- all Johnny-Come-Latelys. I shave with nothing but Gillette razors. My most-used of the bunch- a 3-pc 1930s Canadian-made short-comb Gillette New. Looks aren't great, gold plating gone for decades, but shaves very well indeed. When I restarted using DE razors a little over 10 yrs ago, I used my Dad's TTO Gillette Aristocrat- but never learned the model name until reading at the forums.

Heck, I've found Gillette Fat Boy & Slim adjustables for $5 at a nearby junk store a few years ago. One was a wreck, but got a couple that needed nothing but cleaning. Junk, thrift, charity, 2nd hand stores, yard & garage sales, friends & relatives can all be sources for old razors. With all the new models sold today at such terribly high prices, the very best of 'em you can buy will be, if you're lucky, *Maybe* as good as an old Gillette.

Yes, virtually all the old Gillettes were made of plated brass, either gold or nickel. The gold plate is very thin, plus gold is soft, & it wears off *Much* faster than the nickel plate. No pot metal in there anywhere. The exceptions not made of brass that I know of- the last-gasp, last made & sold Techs that seemed to be aluminum, & the wartime GI & civilian market plastic 3-pc razors. The aluminum Techs were awful, but a good brass Tech makes a great shaver. I have a nickel-plated Tech made in my birth year that looks new.

I might slowly get into collecting so much to learn though.

I am going to start walking up Ste-Catherines Street in Montreal and check out the pawn shops!

I am starting to think of maybe finding an old Gilette like you guys are discussing.

Just to have ONE... LOL
