My Newly Installed Catch Can

I installed it a month ago and what you see in the transparent reservoir is the oil it collected in about 1000km/620mi. I would rather that oil stayed out of the intake manifold and the cats.

I only recently read about locating the catch can in a cool location to catch condensation, so I might be relocating the catch can in the near future,
 
That is a lot. Didn't realize LS engines were that bad. I've got one on my Neon that I've located in the air box.
 
I drive conservatively. The can is smaller than it looks in the photo. The reservoir is only about 1 in inner dia.

Did not know that the 2006 4.3 is an LS engine. Time to look it up on Wikipedia.

My oops, it's not. I saw Sierra and didn't read further.
 
Don't think those separators are rated for oil/gas or the temperatures an engine is running at.
 
That's not a ton, especially if it's an engine known for blowing oil through the PCV. In my Jeep, I can put an ounce or more into the catch can in 200 miles if I'm really beating on it and it's hot out. Sustained high rpm, especially with some high vacuum decel will pull a good bit into the can on my motor (valve cover baffling isn't great and my PCV valve is gutted for better flow).

I have had this ARO branded (now part of Ingersoll Rand) separator sitting around for about twenty years and I had originally bought it for pneumatic line use. This particular separator has been discontinued though parts are still available for it, including an aluminium bowl. If my polycarbonate bowl does not hold up I will replace it with the aluminium bowl.

The JEGS separator linked to in the previous post looks like a nice unit.
 
I did a catch can on my 2013 Silverado with 5.3L at 1190 miles. It now has 7205 on it, and in that time frame is has captured roughly 4 oz of oil and condensation out of the PCV line. I did start early with a Jegs unit, and it is pretty good. I moved up to the CP unit that does a lot better.

I am using the High Efficiency can from Conceptual Polymer. They have a great PDF there on the whole idea behind these catch cans along with some ideas about various designs. Pretty good read.

I just read through the CP white paper linked to in the previous post. Impressive! I might graduate to it in the future. In the meantime I will evaluate the performance of my existing set up and keep an eye on pressure drop through the catch can and also the oil trapping efficiency.
 
George, the one you have will do a great job. From what I can tell, it is pretty similar to the Jegs unit. Like I said, I gave the Jegs a short time on my engine before going to the CP, and the Jegs made me very convinced that the oil in the PCV thing was something that I wanted to take care of.

But with the Jegs unit, I checked the line from the Jegs back to the intake, and there was still a slight trace of oil in that line. When I put on the CP unit, I mounted it in a slightly different location, so I put on new hose to and from it. The return hose now remains completely dry. So the CP unit must has some slight edge over the Jegs unit I used.

Nonetheless, you will really like what the one you have on now will do for you. If I hadn't come across the CP unit, I would probably still be using the Jegs unit. I was happy with what it was doing.
