Any comments on these? I use the first one in everything..

MB 228.51 & 228.5 are rigorous specs and the former spec. requires newer additive types (lower SAPS). I like the latter oil better based on specs met and having 1.0% ash rather than 1.3%.

Is there any good reason for using a lower sulfate ash oil?
I dont have any "modern" diesel in my stable, no cats or partikel filters etc.

I use the oil in:
My Ford 4000 farmtraktor.
Durango 5.9
hyundai atos 1.0
Motorcykle, fourwheeler,lawn mover, moped etc.
Ie everything thats fourstroked.

Some reasons for lower ash oils are:
1. Some engines don't tolerate higher ash oils well in the piston grooves and piston ring area (it's hard to say which ones other than by what the manufacturer recommends). They are sensitive to ash buildup there which can increase oil consumption.

2. Ash is abrasive and can increase wear relative to an oil with less ash that otherwise is similar

3. The much spoken of emission friendliness because ash can build up in cats and the phosphorous chemically deactivates the cat material. Sulfur is bad too but I forget why (sorry).
