I rented an 02/03 taurus with 15k miles, the cheap 3.0 motor (vulcan?). Went steady state 65mph trying to save gas and still only got 27 mpg, mirroring what others have said.

The 16" wheels and continental tires sure cornered good though.

RE: your Caprice, definately sell it private party; there are some folks who really love those cars; your dealer will give you a lame trade-in on that.

Well, I took delivery today, at the "Internet Price".
Due to some odd factors related to my financing, I chose to trade the old car in... actually, more importantly, my old car had enough challenges that I just didn't want to sell her to a private party.
I like straight dealing, and once you deduct all the repairs my car needed from the private party price, the dealer's offer was fair. I don't feel guilty about selling it with a transmission on the way out if it's to a dealer.
I learned something: the Taurus/Sable in recent years are a BUNCH stiffer-riding than the equivalent vehicles from GM. An '02 Impala base model soaks up bumps a lot better than a Taurus/Sable.
I'll be posting another thread shortly on reccomended oils, and some other questions having to do with the transmission.
