I'm suprised you went 15k on non-A3-rated syn in a VW turbo, although I'm sure it won't do any harm.

I've had many OC's done for me; but ironically I've just started doing them on my own b/c I have a vehicle I can actually do them on easily!

Speaking of killer coupons, my girlfriend texted me this morning while she was waiting for her oil to be changed, and I told her I could have done it for her and saved her money. But then she told me she got a coupon from Wagjag that gave her three oil changes for $39! And each of those oil changes included a tire rotation too! I couldn't possibly beat that price if I did the oil change for her, even if we found the oil on sale! So I won't be changing the oil on her little red Aveo for a while!

What are the up-sales at each of the 3 oil changes for $39 ? The total may be several hundreds ?

It's impossible any shop can survive with $13 oil change with free tire rotation without any up-sales.

Oh yeah, they will try hard to upsell. Doubly so when they see a woman. The key is, "No, No, No, and No."

that happens when you slowly realize that oil choice is not nearly as mentally challenging as bitogers make it out to be....

that said... I still do *all* my oil changes.

Ya know, I have been working on my own vehicles for ~40 years and I always mention that I do all of my own repairs(especially brakes and such) but, one time about 18-19 years ago, I needed some front brakes for one of my daily drivers(DD). It was February and very cold outside so, I went to a local muffler/brake shop for one of their $59 brake specials(front or rear).

Well, I had a frozen caliper and it ruined on of my rotors so, needless to say, I also needed one rotor. Because the caliper was frozen and they did not want to try to free up the sliders and piston as I would have tried(I don't know what they would have charged for that labor), they said that I needed at least 1 caliper and 1 rotor along with the $59 brake special. The other rotors was able to be turned at $35...Wooowaaa! Wait a minute!

I needed the car so that day and the next day so, I asked them..."how much for 2 new rotors and 1 caliper". They replied with..."Well sir, we have this *Loaded Caliper* set that comes with everything"(front pads, 2 rotors/2 calipers) installed, tax and everything for............~$400.00 installed, IIRC! Shame on me

Guess what?

I went for it and never let anyone touch my brakes or car(s) again unless absolutely nessessary(winter time or the inevitable) and something unavoidable happens. I always try to make sure that by October, everything with all of our vehicles is Tip-Top!

In case anyone is interested in what 1 reman caliper, 1 new rotor, 1 rotor turned and $59 brakes would have cost as compared to the ~$400 "loaded caliper set"? Here's the break down as I remember it...

1 reman caliper-$150 installed
1 new rotor-$120 installed
1 rotor turned-$35
front pad special-$59
Total-$364 as compared to the $400 "loaded calipe" kit(2 of everything and front pads). Not even good pads!

This is how shops make comparisons with their customers. They tell the customers that they can spend X amount of $$$'s and get just a few items or, they can spend a little more money and get everything. Well, they got me! Never again!

This post is about backsliding back to normal.

Tell you the truth some of the BITOG fever that was around in 2003 / 2004 / 2005 IMO is not so catchy anymore.

I feel sort of that I am getting back to normal.

As Arnie the Terminator would say "I'll be back" or rather the NON BITOGERS would say "Welcome back"

True, but not over-thinking it and doing tons of "homework" and discussion--well, that would be no fun.

I'm approaching the big Six-Oh and I can say that I've never paid for it (or THAT either). Who knows what the future brings but at the intervals I am doing now, I may go completely senile between one OC and another.

In any case, Wayne, you are absolved. This is a hobby, not a religion.

The main factor that motivated me to change my own was two screwed up changes back to back in 1977. First one was a drain plug only finger tightened, second was the grease monkey sitting on the powder blue velour seats with grease all over his pants.

Still haven't gotten over it. If I want it done right - I have had a hard time trusting anyone else.

A couple of years ago I accompanied my brother-in-law to a jiffy lube to get his oil changed. It about made me puke.

Same here, but if you plan accordingly and don't live in Nome AK, it should be possible to change before the snow flies and then in the spring... One of mine is now running Mobil 1 Extended Performance on a one year OCI, will be due in May of '12...

They tried to up sell her big time! Told her she needed a transmission fluid change and a new serpentine belt and wanted $412 for it! She told them thanks but no thanks!

I do my own for 9 months of the year, In winter I get somebody else to do it. Either I find a place I trust or pay a mechanic to do it with the oil & filter I bring in.

Don't feel bad, I took the Soobie(Subaru Impreza) to the dealer on Saturday for an Oil Change @ 3253 miles. This was the first oil change on the car. Given it's a lease I'll let the dealer run the gammut on it so I don't have problems at time of termination. I just found it funny that I had to wait an hour for an oil change, and while waiting they had typical dealer reading material and they show that conventional oil can be changed at 7500 miles(instead of them recommending 3k). They didn't use Subaru oil, but Cam2, probably why the service was $34.99(yes I know, major rip). They did air up the tires though!
