My Ford Edge Plan?

I own a 2008 Ford Edge which has 91,000 km. The next oil change will be at 95,000 km.
At 95,000 km I will put in Quaker State Conventional 5w20 conventional and one of the following filters:

Then when the vehicle hits 100,000 km, I'm going to switch to a high mileage oil. For this I have already purchased Castrol GTX High Mileage 5W-20 semi-synthetic and put on one of the filters shown above.

The vehicle currently has Quaker State Conventional 5w20 conventional with the Fram orange can filter. This was done at 90,000 km.

For the 95,000 km change I'm thinking about just using the Fram orange can oil filter again. I have no beef with these filters. For the 100,000 km change, I'm going to either use the Mobil 1 209 filter or the Fram Tough Guard.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

I used the Orange Can filters for many years w/o any problems at all. In fact had I not joined BITOG I'd probably still be using them. They are probably close to the #1 selling filter in the world, that's if they aren't the #1 selling filter in the world. I stopped using them because I found there were better filters for the money. Will they hurt your engine? I seriously doubt it. Would I go out and buy more? Highly unlikely. If I were you, I'd use it, and wouldn't buy anymore of them. Your other filters are just fine. JMO

I would also use the Orange Fram for this 5K oil change. The other filters are good too and would consider them for longer OCI. Ed

I'm curious, why not Motorcfaft filters? I understand the Motorcraft oil is more expensive oil than the others. I just don't get why not Ford filters? Why high mileage oil in a car with low mileage? Is it leaking or burning oil?

Exactly.
If it's not broken, don't fix it. Using a thicker high mileage oil with seal swell will be counter-productive if not required.

Any of that will work just fine for you IMO. The only thing I'd consider is whether or not your next OCI will take you into winter, if it will I'd not use the orange can as it's the only filter you have there with a nitrile ADBV. No sense in using nitrile over the winter when you already have a good assortment of silicon ADBV filters available.

Several of those you should be able to use for multiple OCI's as your intervals are short and you've got some top tier filters there.

For the Americans: the OPs Edge currently has 56,000 miles. The switch to High Mileage oil is scheduled to happen at just over 62,000.

He's been changing oil at 3,100 mile intervals.

The vehicle has no oil leaks that I know of.

I just seems that once I hit 100,000 km, High Mileage oil is the thing to do? To be honest, I've never had a vehicle hit 100,000 km before. In the past I either sold them or traded in on a new one.

I've used the Fram orange can here in the winters before no problem. Furthermore, we all plug our cars in here in the winter as it does get down to -40 C here.

Like I said earlier, I have no issues with the Fram orange can. Actually, I think the orange can may be better than that NAPA Gold filter I have. I think the NAPA Gold filter looks cheap. I'm not saying the fram orange can is top notch, but for someone like me who changes my oil frequently, they are fine.

Does Ford (Motorcraft) make their own filters, or do they contract it out to a filter manufacturer? For example, NAPA filters are WIX I do believe.

Let me add some more info.

My afford Edge is the SEL AWD version with a 3.5 L engine. I use it sometimes to tow an ATV on a trailer.

That's a piece of cake towing wise.
High Mileage oils are largely a marketing gimmick best ignored.
Since your located in Northern Alberta I'd recommend you use a 0W-20. For starting at temp's down to about -25C I'd suggest the Mobil made Toyota 0W-20 but if you do any significant amount of starting at temp's below that then Mobil 1 0W-20.

Will the engine suddenly begin to leak and burn copious amounts of oil?
Will the bearing clearances suddenly open up?
Will rod knock suddenly ensue?
Seriously, given the short OCIs you've run on a quality conventional oil, I doubt that your Edge really needs GTX HM.
You could stay with Quaker State Conventional, probably for the life of the vehicle.
It also appears that you drive around 15K miles each year, so the vehicle sees some decently long drives.
You could therefore probably open up the envelope from 5K k changes to at least 7K k, and likely more.

There's not always a real "need" to use a high mileage oil. I've used in some people's cars that are starting to use more oil than they'd like and have had good results. Or running it in a car with a lot of seeps...but in my personal stuff, I've never ran high mileage motor oil. I do use Maxlife in my transmissions, but thats more I just like the fluid in general and it's additive package. My 96 I think counts as "high mileage" and really has no significant amount of oil consumption or reason to use a High Mileage oil. With your short OCI, I don't think there's any reason to stray away from good plain conventional motor oil.

I was thinking on putting in the HM stuff as a preventative leaking thing. My plan is to run this car to the ground.

Ok, if I stick with the Quaker State Conventional, what am I going to do with the Castrol GTX High Mileage oil? Dump it into the local motor oil recycling depot?

There's no issue with going from a HM conventional oil back to a conventional oil. It's actually pretty decent oil, so no reason not to run it in your car for an oil change. I'm basically just saying there's no reason to run it, so there's no need to get it from now on.

Go ahead and use it, of course.
It certainly isn't going to hurt anything.
All I'm saying is that you don't really need it, and when you do need an High Mileage oil, use Maxlife, with which I've had very good results in two cars, with poor results using GTX High Mileage in one of them.
If and when you start to notice leaks and high consumption, which you may never see, then try an High Mileage oil.
