My Ford dealer is now using Mobil 1

I think it is the brand recognition IMHO. The owner also owns an SVT dealership. We had a GT500KR in the showroom, a couple BOSS 302's.....etc.

And everybody knows Mobil 1.

I think it is a wise move that will net them an increase in oil changes. Which means other things will get caught when they do their inspections, and they'll have more business.

Probably so on all counts

We can get it cheaper if we have advance notice, but usually its a service writer coming in with an RO saying "customer is waiting they want Mobil 1" so we have to go with what is convenient.

Wow, that's awful! I buy it through Chrysler for $9.99/L for Mobil 1 0w40, their most expensive PCMO grade. You guys are getting raped!

What is funny is when i cruise across the street to the Audi/BMW/Mercedes/Porsche dealer when we get one of those cars in for an oil change, they only charge us soemthing like 6.99 a quart for Mobil 1 0W40 when i pick that up from them since I am there.

Perhaps you should buy all the Mobil grades through them? LOL!

Ha really. I love going over there, they are one of those shops with tile floors in the work areas and the part dept looks like a pro shop. One of the times I walked over there they had a Carrera GT up on the lift stripped down for some job, I think I stood there drooling for about 15 mins.

Ben, I'm guessing that the MC Full Synthetic would cost them a lot more than Mobil 1. I don't blame them for using any good brand as long as the quality is there. The one time they changed the oil in my Escape (a mistake, didn't charge me) they used Valvoline (fine) but used a "Pronto" filter. I wasn't impressed with that. Did 3k then changed it myself.

Or pay the lowest guy on the totem pole to stop by Walmart after lunch. Seriously.

I don't doubt that it does. Someone should be shot for that price even if no one pays it.

2quarts@O'Reilley's > 5quarts@Walmart is wrong.

We would if we had one. The closest Wal-Mart is 30-40 mins away. It is a lot easier to order it up from a normal vendor because it goes on a charge account.

What is really messed up is Wal-Mart sells Motorcraft fluids for less than a dealer can buy them from Ford for even with all of our program discounts factored in.

Yeah, I know, I've been there and done that too. I just got set off by that $12.99 a quart figure and couldn't get past it. I also know no one (hopefully!) pays $12.99 a quart but still, it's not like we are talking only a 50 cent or dollar a quart difference. It just struck me as something that makes your life difficult as a dealer trying to compete in the marketplace and seemed out of line.

10 years ago my Ford dealer was charging $58 for a "full synthetic" Motorcraft oil change, with a Motorcraft filter. Considering how much the cost of oil has increased in recent years $70 for a Mobil 1 oil change at the dealer is not outrages. I thought I read that quick change oil places charge ~$70 for their "synthetic oil" changes. And not too sure what "synthetic oil" they use or filter for that matter. Imagine using Mobil 1 with a no name white box filter good for maybe 3,000 miles, even worse than the OCD from Fram

I think its smart marketing on the part of Mobil and the Ford dealers offering the Mobil 1 OC. The Ford dealers want to bring in customers for service, Mobil has the brand recognition. Why not? Even if it brings in 5-10% more customers for oil changes its a big winner. Once in the shop the service writer gets a shot at up selling additional services, win, win.

With Mobil's tremendous marketing power and bank account I'd expect to see this in GM, Chrysler, Honda dealers, etc., etc....... That's if it isn't in place in dealerships already.

bdcardinal's dealership isn't paying that much for M1 at O'Reilly, that number is simply the "list" price. That is O'Reilly's suggested resale price (the price they suggest you sell it to your customer at) and is more or less COMPLETELY fictitious.

Many years back however, it used to be that jobbers got a part for one price and walk ins got it for "list" price. Throughout the years consumers and DIY'ers started demanding lower prices and the bigger auto parts chain stores started reciprocating to pick up more sales... Now the average walk in price isn't terribly more than jobber price on many things. Yes, we (jobbers) still do get a significant discount on certain things and the list or suggested resale still remains, though no walk in customer will pay that. Now, what I have said doesn't apply to everywhere though. Some dealership parts departments still stick to the list price scheme.

I just noticed that Costco up here charges only $49.99 for an oil change with Castrol Syntec, that's quite a bit lower than most places up here charge for a synthetic oil change.

That is an excellent deal! I believe that's what Mr Lube charges for a conventional oil change up here now.
