In a strange twist, that I will detail in another thread that resulted me at the Ford dealer today with the Expedition, the local Ford dealership had Mobil 1 ads all over the place inside the service department when I went in there today.

They are offering Mobil 1 oil change specials now

The local dealer put up a new huge LCD billboard out front about six months ago. For the past three weeks it has said, "Did you know we carry Wix filters now?"

My buddy works at a Ford dealer. He was saying they don't use Motorcraft filters unless they have too. They automatically use Wix because they are cheaper. I don't know if they are advertising that at his location.

as for the OP (orginal post)

M1 is definitely well known for most regular non-BITOG consumers. How much was the service? I wonder if it is because some of the newer Fords use 0w20? Does Motorcraft make a 0w20?

I think it is $70.00 for a complete oil change with 5L of Mobil 1 and probably a Motorcraft filter?

FWIW we only carry Motorcraft filters. We also have the Mazda OE filters since we are also a Mazda dealer.

We will sometimes keep a couple cases of Mobil 1 in stock due to customer requests. O'Reileys charges us US$8.79 a quart if we buy it out from them.

These guys went hardcore. They have pamphlets, Mobil 1 business cards....etc

OK! OK! You're on to me. I am actually the service manager at that dealer.

You know that just does not compute. You can buy the 5-quart jug at my Walmart for $23. Pennzoil Platinum is $21. That comes out to $4.60 a quart for the M1 and $4.20 for the PP.

Now I will agree that the single quart prices at Walmart are higher of course, but I've always wondered why anyone would buy those? Really why would they? And how does O'Reileys get off charging more than Walmart to a commercial customer? I just don't get it.

I'm surprised that Wix is that much cheaper at the dealer. I'm sure dealers get a discount and all but what does a Motorcraft go for Under $4 at Walmart vs $6 or so for the Wix?

I think Ford dealers can use about whatever they want. Mine switched from Motorcraft to Valvoline products several years ago. I do my own oil changes but when they serviced my transmission they used Maxlife.

Nothing can match Mobil's promotional material and the tools they give their large PCMO customers and distributors. Above service manager is doing the right thing. Even if he captures a 10% increase in premium oil sales, he makes A LOT more money (depending on volume) simply by offering his customers a choice. I don't get why every dealer, repair shop, truck service center doesn't have a premium oil good, better, best program?

I think it is the brand recognition IMHO. The owner also owns an SVT dealership. We had a GT500KR in the showroom, a couple BOSS 302's.....etc.

And everybody knows Mobil 1.

I think it is a wise move that will net them an increase in oil changes. Which means other things will get caught when they do their inspections, and they'll have more business.

He is right. I work at a dealership and we get oil from autozone's commercial side if it is anything other than motorcraft. We usually pay right under $8 a qt like 7.90 or so for mobil 1 or castrol edge.

According to our invoices from O'Reilley's they claim Mobil 1 is supposed to retail for something like 12.99 a quart.

We can get it cheaper if we have advance notice, but usually its a service writer coming in with an RO saying "customer is waiting they want Mobil 1" so we have to go with what is convenient.
