My first gun

My grandfather gave me a gun last night. I mentioned that I was going to look for one after the holidays knowing that he has an interest in them. He basically reached down and grabbed this one out of his desk drawer. He said that It was to difficult for him to load at his age(even with the easy load thing) so it didn't do him any good. Hes a very generous man and we have a great relationship. Hes 94, I'm 27.

Anyways

Reger SR9 9mm.

I want to know how to properly clean and maintain this gun. My girlfriend and I applied to FOID cards so that we can both go to the range and learn to shoot properly.

Any advice regarding this model, etc would be great.

Ruger's website has a downloadable copy of the manual. This will include (dis)assembly and cleaning instructions.

Since you're in Chicago, the laws regarding ownership/transport/use/ammo purchase are not reasonable. You must learn what they are and obey them.

As far as safety, the NRA offers basic pistol courses across the country. You can find a class/instructor on their website. The course is 6 hours classroom and about 2 hours at a range. After the course you will be able to safely handle, load, unload, clear, and fire your pistol.

I'd like to move next year. (If I can find work). I'm thinking N/S Carolina and other places near or on the east coast.

I have the manual that shows the break down to clean etc. I'm a visual learner and would rather pay to take a class to really learn the most possible.


I find that lock to be obtrusive but I don't have a safe box to lock it in.

If you are south, Deb's gun range in Hammond is really good. They are Ruger dealers and run a great NRA class.

Good weapon!

Yours has the new trigger that does not need to be recalled so you are good to go.

One of the members here lives in your area and I've asked if he can possibly direct you to a place to get some safety tips and such.

Look into finding a NRA instructor and spend a few lessons with them. Well worth the $$ and saves you in the end as far as $$ spent on ammo and frustration.

I really like the Ruger SR series. Excellent weapon for the $$ and they shoot WELL.

Welcome to a really great hobby and I salute you for taking responsibility for your own safety and of your family. PLEASE GET SOME TRAINING as everyone has urged you to do. The other thing with a gun is practice, practice, and more practice!!! Practice clearing stovepipes and jams. Practice shooting right and left handed. Know your laws, actually do a search and read the statues. I am going to pay for an hour of time with a local attorney to go over what to do/not do if I do have to shoot an intruder.
I don't mean to discourage you, but with the great power in a gun comes similar responsibility. It is much better to know what and how to do in advance.

I hit up youtube for every gun I buy and watch a break down of it before I attempt on my own. If I dont I usually screw up. I just bought a very uncommon vz. 61 Skorpion that has very few videos alone a cleaning vid. Im very scared to take it apart. I live in glenview, and work in lombard. It's put away till I get my foid etc. This will give me ample time to watch videos and learn all that I can. A lombard cop that does traffic control at my work even offered to take me to station and use their range, teach me to clean etc. Thought that was pretty cool of him.

Just in case since the mag in the case is loaded..

PLEASE make sure that the one in the weapon is NOT loaded.

(Here are some photos of a SR40 but the CLOSE to the same as your weapon)


Carefully press the magazine release (the round button JUST behind the trigger opening) and it should fall out.

Magazine out the bottom;

ALWAYS KEEP YOUR FINGER (or anything else) AWAY FROM THE TRIGGER UNLESS THE WEAPON IS POINTING DOWN RANGE, ON TARGET AND READY TO FIRE.

Then pull back the slide to verify that the chamber is clear (chamber is the backside of the barrel, normally shiny and where the ammo is chambered)

Dirty chamber (I shot this yesterday for about 300 rounds so a little dirty)

Just make sure that weapon is in safe state. ALWAYS treat ANY weapon as LOADED READY TO FIRE.

Yes those are the first steps I took when it was handed to me. I removed the loaded clip and checked the chamber
