So, today i went to pick up my new (86) ranger.

took three different tries at different banks and stores to finally get my paycheck cashed so i could pay for it. finally, got my money.

i go pay for the truck, start driving home.

i go get some gas, buy two bottles of gas treatment since the truck has been sitting so long. then i put 40 dollars on the pump, ends up with about 35 in the front tank before it's full, so i put the other five in the rear tank.

start to pull out, and smoke starts pouring out of the A/C vents and i can smell burning.

i jump out of the truck, run inside the store, grab the fire extinguisher, and pump it into the cowl, sucks it into the vents and puts out the fire, or so i think
i pop the hood and the entire A/C box is in flames, so i give it another hit and put it out.

people stopped to take pictures and videotape this.

so, then, i drive to the car wash and hose out the cabin and blast the cowl untill all the yellow dust comes out.

apparently there were leaves in the condensor and they caught the blower resistor on fire, so now i need a new airbox.

no big deal, i can get one for 10 dollars at the scrap heap.

so, i start driving home, covered in fire extinguisher dust, the truck shuts down on a hill, [censored].

i try to drop a gear and restart it, syncro spools up, i let the clutch out, crack. don't know what that was, [censored].

so, i get it pulled over, open the hood, i blew a fuel line off the FPR, i cut the cracked end off and cram it back on, engine cranks up, i put it in gear...nothing.

pressure plate is busted.

call my dad, he comes in his f-150, we tow the truck back to the shop i got it from with a tow strap, half way there, the muffler falls off.

**** it, we bungee that sucker back up, and keep going.

i'm torn between demanding a refund or simply letting the guy fix it, i mean [censored], all that's gone wrong, there's not much left!

at least the engine runs strong :/

Mercy. It sounds like the car had been sitting for a great many years to have deteriorated to that point.

You can count on replacing every wear part and all of the rubber hoses in that vehicle before its all said and done.

Ah, a young Texans day....trying to get a paycheques cashed, and trying to get an old truck runnin'....

Sounds like the start of a GREAT country song!!!

The truck is 24 years old and sat a long time. I'd be surprised if you didn't have any problems. How much did you pay for it?

A truck that old would have to be free, or less than $100

It was 1200, i'd test driven it before and it was fine then.

the reason i paid so much is that the engine does run strong, the transmission shifts smooth, and it's a twin tanker, which is rare, less than 2% of rangers had twin tanks, and both work, which is even more rare.

With any used vehicle the purchaser can expect issues.

With this vehicle you can expect more issues given it has been sitting for a long time because sitting is not necessarily a good thing when it comes to vehicles.

A clutch and pressure plate for that truck shouldn't be too expensive, especially if you can do the work yourself.

How long did the truck sit? It seems like it was a long time given how many things went wrong on the drive home.

Oh ,hey man ,were just bustin' chops this is a great way to spend meaningfull time with wrenches in hand and the smell of differential oil in your hair. Its also a great way to get to know her and carress her into being receptive to your touches so she can take care of you in return.Explore her individuality....etc.

A car keeps it's 'youth' by being USED. It ages greatly by doing NOTHING.

It's born to be run.

You may get a rusted hulk in full size for chump change, but a smaller pickup, especially one that is truly small and not morphed into a midsize/near full size is going to pull decent coin here. Even with issues.

I'd pay decent for an 80's Ranger. Tons of engine/transmissions you can throw in them. You can ditch the bed if need be and throw on a home grown flatbed. Fit a 302 in there too.

It would be OBDI so the PCM/VIN/ENGINE isn't an issue in most states. You just need the right box.

It would be the perfect tinkering project ..or just about right for 99% of what anyone needs a pickup for 99% of the time.

absolutely this

and, really, i love these little things, my first car ever was an 88 ranger, and ever since i lost it i've been trying to get another.

the little buggers will never die once you get them running right.

Good luck, my friend.
With the right attitude, which I think you have, and a willingness to get dirty, which you also seem to have, you'll fix her issues and get plenty of miles out of her.

+1
Hope things work out...You seen like a awesome guy with a awesome attitude.

perfect time to ditch the gasser and drop a 4bt cummins 5spd in there. Could be the last first and last car you ever buy. would run for ever getting better than 30MPG in every situation.

but that's just how my twisted mind works.

well, the 2.9 is actually really strong in this truck, if i was gonna putt a hummin cummins in something it would probably be my 86 Bronco II.

Hmm, cummins powered crawler, that would be nice.
