Some of you know my story - 98 Sienna. Consistently consumes 1 qt in first 1k and then slows to half that. Thought it was the oil rings. Had an oil leak a year ago (blown seal) - mechanic fixed it, so I thought present consumption must once again be oil rings. Been hitting them w/ Neutra - thought it was working, but now w/ more data it's obvious consumption continues.
I got curious and went out tonite and felt around under the engine - found black goopy stuff (feeling from underneath near the back of the engine). So now I'm thinking mechanic fixed one leak but missed this one. I'd rather not drop $$ at this stage of the game to fix the leak. (no oil on driver way btw).
Meanwhile, I had a leak with my Mazda 323 in the late 1990's - I stopped using synthetic, went straight dino and it hasn't leaked a drop in 10 years (nor is it leaking now with M1 HM 10w40).
The Sienna presently has Schaeffer 9000 (5w30). Historically it ran M1, and has had this consumption problem for several years.
Long story shortened - it appears I'll need to go with an HM oil in the van. It's got close to 150k miles on it, apparently it's time. My question - would M1 HM slow or stop this leak as well as (eg) Pennz. HM probably would. I'd like to stick with a synthetic (I like to push my OCIs out there a bit). But if dino is definitely better, I'd go with it. As stated, my 323 still doesn't leak w/ M1 HM. Any other data out there on M1 HM?
