I have A muncie ready to go back together. I have assembled the countershaft needle bearings, 80 of them, using my green wheel bearing grease to hold the needle bearings in place. My local trans guy says that it is ok to use this type of grease. I just want to ask here if anyone thinks it is A bad idea to use this thick grease ?

I assume your trans guy is wrong even through he probably has got away with doing it his way. I wouldn't use it because the melting point is too high. There are assembly greases with a low melting point and you should use something like Lubegard Assemblee Goo Green. Not a typo, Lubegard spells it like that.

This is how I do it so I don't think it is a bad idea. You don't need a ton of grease, just enough to hold the needles in place. The dedicated lubes are definitely nice, and likely preferred, but I don't do enough Muncies (or other manuals with needle bearing counter shafts) to buy those products. Paul Cangialosi says it is ok to use wheel bearing grease to pack the needles so I am fine with using WB grease. The only thing he says to not use is white lithium type grease.

Carry on. That is the way manual transmissions have been assembled for the past 100 years. Just be sure you’re not working with a degraded Muncie case. Age, use, and backyard repairs have taken a toll. The cluster shaft holes in the case are notorious for wearing, as well as the reverse idler shaft holes, and the overall case being distorted.
