"Muddy" brake pads??

I replaced the brakes on my Father's 03 Elantra a while back and the pads that were on it (not stock, put on by a shop) seemed to build up a thick "mud" all over the brackets and calipers. It was a real mess, especially after brake cleaner hit it.

Has anyone else seen this or know what caused it? The other vehicles I maintain have never had this happen.

Only ever seen really bad muddy looking stuff with real asbestos pads from memory.

An asbestos removal company that I deal with gets lots of work cleaning up new stuff coming from China when found to have asbestos in it.

Maybe the brake shop used a lot of anti-squeal grease.

maybe brake dust and water?

It may be excessive dust from the pads.
This indicates fast wear and soft pads.
Possibly aggressive machine marks on the rotors.
