just received a motor guard from an ebal sale and i tell ya , i can see why Ralph is sold on these units. i really like their design, (but not the material constructed from)
one question for Ralph, you say that you make delrin pieces for the the unit to fit rolls of TP, i have found that the single roll packs of scott 1000 have a smaller tube than any other packaging, even the scott in the bulk packs, so why the need for the pieces when it seems to fit good event with the now normal roll tube size of 1 5/8in, also is the unit suposed to press the rolls whenn closing the unit? ive noticed that when i removed the tp it was crinkled in the middle of the inner tube. i cant wait to start utilizing this unit, will probaly use it for a transmission filter.

Instigator,
The Motor Guard depends on the seal inside the core of the TP The older 1 1/2 ID TP sucked up against the 1 1/2 OD parts and made the seal. 1 5/8" ID TP does the same thing but makes a wrinkle for the oil to leak thru. Oil pressure can break the seal at the end by pushing up on the paper. 1 5/8 ID paper usually works fine but usually isn't good enough when you are selling something.
On my 30 year old Motor Guard M-100 I adapted it to 1 5/8 OD with a 1" long piece of 1 1/2 ID x 1 5/8 OD copper tubing. The old lube oil filters had non removable internal parts. The newer M-30 and M-60 have 1 1/2" polypropylene parts that swell in gasoline or hot lube oil. I have gone to black nylon parts and machine them myself.
You may not like cast aluminium but most people will choose it over glass filled nylon. It is similar to plastic valve covers. Most people prefer cast aluminum. After 40 years I know most of the little things I like and don't like about the TP filters. I can deal with the little Motor Guard problems easier than the others. If you try to install an over sized roll in a M-30 or M-60 it will pinch in the gasket. It must be unrolled to 4 1/4". That's 50 rounds of Scott 1000 or 10 rounds of Scott Kimberly Clark. All TP filters are non channeling when high quality TP is used.
Gulf Coast has gone to sock type elements for people that are not expert TP squeezers like me. I just used a coupon to purchase four rolls of Ultra big roll 1000 sheet at Walgreen Drug Store. The Motor Guard has always been a compressing type filter. It's a one pass filter which doesn't matter for lube oil. It does for many things Motor Guards are used for such as in electronics.

if i read right, the white pieces on the two halves of the unit will distort when fuel or hot oil is applied? but on you site you have a pic of a unit here that looks like the ones that i have in my filter housing, unless those are the delrin or nylon ones you were describing.

also wanted to ask about the transmission manifold setup you have in one of your other pics, it looks like a couple of female tee fittings with a pipe fitting in between them for the orifice. what size is the orifice for the 1/4in hose that you are using ?

Instigator,
The stock injection molded polypropylene parts are not compatable with gasoline and some lube oils. The machine company that made parts for me recommended Delrin. They made black Delrin parts for the bottom. They had trouble getting black Delrin for the top half and made them out of white Delrin. I make my own now out of black nylon 6/6. I used cast nylon for a few. I've made a few from 6061 aluminum alloy. I can pay as much as $85.00 for each filter for some high pereformance plastics. The orifice is 1/8" The picture you saw might have been an adapter set up checking pressure differences. The M-30 and M-60 don't need an external adapter. They can be drilled internally so that all you need is to put them in series with the oil cooler. My first Motor Guard ATF installation was on a 61 Buick dynaflow I found a test plug in the high accumulator that had about 80 PSI with the shifter in drive. I hooked up the line to the filter and returned the clean fluid to the pan with a self taping hollow bolt. They were experimental then, they are well proven now. Motor Guard didn't have a ATF adapter. Frantz had several choices. I sent my last Frantz adapter to a guy in California with a Frantz he wanted to use for ATF. The stock ATF filters are even less effective than the stock engine oil filters. ATF is loaded with abrasives, there is just no carbon to turn it black. You can get little make believe ATF filters but they are not much better than the stock filter. Frantz used the next size smaller than 1/8, 7/64" I believe.
Some of the old timers didn't feel the bypass orifice was necessary as long as you didn't allow the filter to clog up. I change mine about once a year. The first few miles will clean the fluid. I did have a manifold on the Camry I have since eliminated the manifold and put the orifice in the filter. Most people think ATF is clean. They are mislead by the dipstick. ATF filters are for clean ATF fanatics like me. ATF filters have never been a hot seller.
