I was thinking of putting the Subaru Extra S in the MTF (seems to be the best fluid for Sub MTF's) and Valvoline gear oil.

Does anyone have any experience with Valvoline Gear oils? Using Synpower in the front and Durablend 80w-90 in the rear.

This is a beach/beater car and I'm not sure when the fluids were last changed.

I was thinking of ordering Amsoil SVT but the Valvoline should do just fine. Easier to get too.

+1 on the Amsoil

1 quart of the Severe Gear® 75W-90 is $12.35 CAN, probably less in the states, that's the dealer pricing, don't pay more than that.

Like Donald says, 10 minutes on the phone and it'll be on your doorstep in 2-3 days, bob's your uncle.

I tried the extra S and I didnt like it.

Walmart brand 75w90 semi syn was ok.

redline 75w90ns is the best I've used so far.

Avoid Mobil1 for the front diff, the chemestry apparently does not play well with the syncros.

Other than that, any quality gear oil should be fine, these aren't too picky.

I have Valvoline Durablend in the front and rear diffs of my 03 Outback, for the past 30k miles.

I have used Valvoline synthetic 75w140 in my mom's 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and it drove fine.

I have VWB 80w90 in my Mitsubishi Lancer transfer case and rear differential, and it works fine. I bought it because I could get it cheaply and it had LS additives.

Of course if you want the absolute best, Amsoil and Redline are excellent choices.

I was thinking of using Valvoline 75w90 in the rear diff. 10 years ago I wouldn't touch Valvoline oils, but they've improved over the last few years. IMO.

One guy on the Forester forums swears by Synpower 75w90.
