Looking at a used chipper with a 8 H.P tecumseh engine. Its has a sticker on the engine, extra life industrial/commercial anyone have the scoop on these. The chipper looks to be 3 to 4 years old, owner says it hasn't run it two years, and won't start he claims it just need a carb cleaning. Its extremely clean looks to be hardly used ? He will take $175 for it. Anything i should look out for.

It's a tecumseh? Probably he's right and it just needs a good carb cleaning, those tecumseh carbs can be troublesome. I can't really think of any reason not to get it, but I'm no expert on chippers at all.
Thanks Nick. I had a ten horse tecumseh on a snowblower that was 32 years old when i sold it that engine was a real workhorse never had a lick of trouble with it, but the carb was real finicky and always need adjusting and a few rebuilds.
good solid engine. I had a 9hp on my 11 year old snowblower. the "I/C" designation primarily means it has a cast iron cylinder liner. almost definitely the carb needs cleaning. 5-10 minutes tops if you know what you are doing. equipment really does not like to sit unused... stabil is your friend.
actually, on my snowblower, I never had a carb issue. but from sitting two years the valve is stuck, or soemthing is gummed up. starting fluid is also your friend

Keep in mind,Tecumseh is out of business.Parts are being handled from "Certified Parts Corp" out of Wisconsin,the future availability is unsure.CPC was said to be wanting to make new engines again to sell to makers,but basically all CPC does is buy up old stocks and sell them until they run down.I wouldnt think the future of Tecumseh engine parts is too bright.
I was on a "list" for a Horizontal (snow blower) 5 HP Tecumseh short block from the "new" manufacturer. The dealer said later that the option to be put on a waiting list disappeared from her computer and she couldn't get any short blocks or complete engines anymore. Other parts (coils, carbs, recoil starters, etc) will be available from old stock for years. I'm going to be rebuilding a pile of older Tecumseh carbs for sale on EBay next year.
There is also an aftermarket company called Rotary that makes a lot of Tecumseh replacement parts. You can probably buy a brand new carb for that engine for $40-$50.
