Hello, I have a question regarding the MRV of the Pennzoil ultra platinum. Why is the MRV lower on the 5w30 and higher on the 0w20? Do these numbers mean that the 5w30 is more easily pumped over the 0w20? I am looking to change the oil in my 3rd get tacoma for the first time since ownership and it calls 0w20 but I am exploring my options so to speak.

the 5w-30 is tested to -35 and the 0w-20 to -40,,,different scale per viscosity, good point to consider is the mrv and ccs when looking for oil for your vehicle, its good that Shell/Pennzoil gives this spec,as many other brands do not.rember that lower the number per viscosity is better than higher .I might add the GTL base oils give a very good showing on this testing.

First and most important question: do you actually live somewhere where your vehicle will see cold starts in <-35*C?

If not, your oil question is moot. The results will be the same; the oil will pump just fine. Buy either one.
Exactly. A good battery mitigates cranking issues.

The winter rating is correct here. It will pump at -35 and above which is the most important factor.

I live in Florida so technically no I don't see cold much at all if any, maybe a month or two of 40-50 degree weather. I am more wondering due to starting flow and preventing starting wear due to decreased oil flow at start up. To me 0w20 is thin.

0w-20 is not recommended for a gen 3 4Runner. Is it OK for a Tacoma?
yes 0w20 is recommended for my Tacoma. When the truck is full heated you can hear the thing tick like crazy but it's "normal" from what I have been told at the dealership.

Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w-30 would work fine ,its a good choice and it may quiet down the valve train noise. use a good anti-drain back oil filter too. and how many miles on the truck??.

It’s a 2020 Tacoma 3.5 with 86k. Also I will most likely just stick with OEM filters since it’s a cartridge filter and it’s just the media that is replaced essentially. Plus I put a Mobil 1 filter next to the oem and the Mobil 1 is slightly shorter.. was interesting

“Flow” is mostly irrelevant. If the oil can be pumped it will flow. That’s what the winter rating represents. At those temperatures you can use an oil with any winter rating.

I don't think PENNZOIL updated the Ultra 0w-20 to S.P. , GF-6A at their site . Looks like the 0w-20 is the only viscosity ( SPs' : 0w-40 , 5w-20 , 5w-30 , 10w30 ) with the S.N.-RC , GF-5 that's shown above . The pictures show the 0w-20 is S.P. , GF-6A . Using it for both SOULs' .

Maybe it’s just me. But, I am not following at all. Not sure if it’s the sentence structure, the contradiction of what you wrote vs the pictures you posted, or both.

Could just be me, though.

the best 5W30 i have used at -35 Celcius is Castrol Extended Performance 5W30 last winter. i also used Pennzoil Ultra Platium 5w30 and the Castrol started way more easily. same vehicle, same conditions. and not plugged. at -23 Celcius which was our average daily temperature last winter, the Castrol started like it was nothing. PUP struggled a bit. Pennzoil Ultra Platium 5w30 is still an impressive product in winter. you will be fine even in severe winter.

I think he is saying that PZ hasn’t updated the info on the website regarding PUP specifically 0W-20 from API SN or SN + despite the bottles being label API SP.

With those kinds of temperatures you really should be using 0w-30
