Re-post from another forum, my guess was a head gasket also, due to similar result due to my recent snowblower problem.
"Neighbor has an old bobcat mower with very little hours on it. IT has a Kohler Magnum 18 engine. It cranks and runs fine and cuts fine but after about 10 minutes, it starts smoking real bad and spitting oil out of the exhaust. You would think that if it is a broken piston it would pretty much immediately start smoking. Any ideas."
best answer to problem
"Nope. A Kohler MV18 (Magnum 18) is a full-pressure lube system.
We had a similar issue with our Magnum 16. Turned out to be a blown head gasket - which then caused some other strange issues. Pulled the head, replaced the gasket and everything's been great since.
Those Magnums were great little motors. Too bad they don't make them anymore"
