Move over Florida! Iowa is ranked the best place to retire - while Alaska, New York and California come out worst

Exactly. So to write off the state just because SS is taxed by the state-without looking at the total picture is silly. OR in my case one wants to live next to their grandkids, or a well run state government (Utah actually has a large state surplus) or where the whole state (Utah) has only 3 million residents.

I agree with you about many of the qualities of living in Utah, such as a well run, fiscally responsible government. But when what, perhaps 95%+ of the Utah population live along the Wasatch Front or in Washington County, on
Count me as one of those 5% on the 93%.

Respectfully-I came for Southern California-and even along the Wasatch front Utahans don't know what crowds and traffic are.

... Taxes, HOAs and CDD fees (almost unique to Florida)
I had to google CDD fees to see what that was. I live in the stix by choice, so I don't deal with all that. My taxes are low, my house insurance is low and don't have to fight traffic every day. The sunsets over the Gulf are like nowhere else. Having said that, I'm in the process of relocating to the hills of TN where, yep, I fit right in.

Didn't see this analysis coming.... But maybe I should have.

Iowa has been ranked as the best state to retire due to its reasonable cost of living, affordable but high-quality healthcare, and low crime levels.

The Hawkeye state overtook historic retirement paradise Florida which came out top last year, according to Bankrate's annual retirement study.
Bankrate ranked all 50 states on affordability, overall well-being, quality and cost of healthcare, weather and crime - and found the best and worst states for retirees were split geographically.

'The Midwest and the South claim the top five states, while the Northeast and West claim the bottom five states, primarily because of the differences in cost of living,' said Bankrate analyst Alex Gailey.

Following Iowa, Delaware, West Virginia, Missouri and Mississippi were ranked as the best states to retire, while New York, California, Washington and Massachusetts rounded out the bottom five.

I’ve driven thru Iowa. No way in Hades is that where I’m going to suffer the rest of my life…

I grew up in Iowa and currently live in Nebraska. I enjoy living here due to the cost of living and the excellent job market but I'm surprised to hear that anyone would aspire to retire here for any reason other than affordability.

It would be quite rare because only roughly 25% of armadillos carry the bacteria, and at least 95% of the human population has a natural immunity to leprosy.
Hmm! Maybe somebody should tell the sensationalist news media.
Nah, If it keeps people out of Florida, I'm good.

Iowa is a nice place to live but don't move here if you expect temperate winter weather.

January 1st to March 1st can be brutal.
I was going to say the same thing. The only things that aren’t good here are winter and car registration, unless you car is 10 years old or older.

We travel a lot and are always glad to be back home in IA. I’ve grew up in IL and lived 5 years in CA. I really want to go back to the physical CA, but not the political CA, as I really liked it there.

Iowa is a really great place for sure.

I've always said, you can draw a "U" around the U.S. and these are all of the undesirable areas to live in. Housing costs are way too high, cost of living is way too high, crime rates are way too high, too many hurricanes, etc. Yes, the climate is nicer, but that can't compensate for all of the negatives...I say, stay away from the coastal areas...

Iowa seems odd. When I worked as an emissions Inspector I took mental notice of out of state plates to give me an idea of who's moving in. California New York and Iowa mainly polk county were the top three that I saw. A few Texas and Georgia as well.

Last ear I drove through Iowa and Nebraska and somewhat fell in love with those two states. I'd like to go back, perhaps in the fall or next spring, and explore them more thoroughly. Your post has given me additional motivation to do so.

Polk county is where the capital, DesMoines is at. It’s a bit urban and probably has folks with the most $$$$.

Grandpa said Iowa roads are always the best 50 miles around DesMoines due to all of the politicians there. DesMoines is not a bad city at all, for a city. I’m a country bum and Ames is as big a town as I’ll live in. That’s in Story county.

It‘s pretty here for sure.

Looks like you've got some prettier spots to explore than I do at the moment. 👍🏼 I need to work on finding some trails for my Polaris.
