I just discovered that Motul is now making a dual-clutch transmission fluid that is compatible with BMW's DCTs and many others. For those who do have a dual-clutch, there seems to be a lot of disagreement or hesitation to deviate from the OEM fluids.

"Especially suitable for Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) supplied by ZF, Getrag, or Borg Warner and used by the main car manufacturers: VW Audi Seat Skoda (DSG or S tronic), BMW (DKG), Mercedes Benz (7G DCT), Porsche (PDK), Ford (Powershift), Opel (DSG), PSA Peugeot-Citroen (DCS), Renault (EDC, DC4), Nissan (GR6)."

They list it as meeting BMW specs DCTF-1 (part number 83 220 440 214) and MTF-LT-5 (part number 83 220 2167 666). They also show it as being equivalent to Pentosin FFL-2, FFL-3, and FFL-4, along with Shell TF DCT-F3 which we know is the factory-fill in the Ferraris that use the higher-output version of my transmission.

KV @ 40 C = 33.8
KV @ 100 C = 7.3
Viscosity index = 189
Flash = 196 C / 385 F
Pour = -45 C / -49 F

This stuff looks very interesting, especially since it can be had for $20/qt or less (compared to FFL-4 @ $40/qt and the OEM-labeled stuff for even more). The viscosity index is also some 12% higher than the OEM FFL-4 fluid, meaning it should perform better across the entire temperature range. I haven't talked to Joey at Motul USA about this yet, but it's on my to-do list for this week. My car should probably get a fluid change and this stuff is really tempting.

Yeah, saw you mention that on M3post (I also posted this info over there). FFL-4 is a good fluid, but getting something with better specs for half the price seems like an obvious choice.

BTW, these Dual clutch fluids can also be used in many Manual Transmissions using a DexronIII type fluid (7.5 cSt@100C) because of the GL-4 additive packages contained therein.

Ford changed their recommendation for the Getrag MT-82 in the 5.0L Mustangs from the Full Synthetic Manual Fluid XT-M5-QS, to their Dual Clutch Fluid to compensate for rough cold shifting. Still didn't help much.

Yep, hence the two BMW ratings that I listed up top.

Back when I was looking for a DCTF for my car, I only saw the Motul stuff on european websites. Either getting the fluid in the USA was impossible, or the price of shipping it was so high, that using something widely sold in the USA made more sense.

That is why I have Ravenol from Blauparts.

I am surprised this fluid didn't specifically mention Mitsubishi. However, Mitsubishi uses Getrag DCT transmissions in their performance models, so it seems okay.

The US vendors have just started getting it.

The Evo's dual-clutch is indeed using the same type of fluid, so this should be okay. The datasheet lists it as being equivalent to the Castrol fluid that's relabeled as FF for Mitsu.

Thanks, not sure why the PDF I linked didn't work for you guys...works just fine for me.

Anyways, I know we had a discussion recently about proper viscosity:

I'm curious if there is anything different to consider in a dual-clutch system. There are a few fluids considered equivalent to the OEM Pentosin FFL-4, but their viscosities seem to be as much as +/- 10%. I just like Motul stuff in general, and this one's price and higher viscosity index are very appealing.

Scroll back up to the top and try it again.

I just tried it on another computer (two different browsers). The URL didn't get copied properly.

Finally got through to Joey @ Motul USA this morning to ask about this fluid. He said that it is of course designed to be a service fluid but was targeted at race use. They got a lot of feedback from GT-R guys and other folks who track their cars. Supposedly this resolves a lot of issues with the factory-fill overheating under extreme use; around town he's not sure there is a significant difference.

I ordered a half-case (6 x 1 qt) of it today for less than half of what the Pentosin FFL-4 costs. Should have it in a week or so, and will plan to change it out once it arrives.

After a few weeks of waiting (supplier/distribution shortages), I finally received this fluid. It will be put into service this Friday and I'll report back if there's any changes in the shift feel.

Shout-out goes to XTR Performance (http://shop.xtrperformance.com/) for the great customer service and patience with locating this stuff.

Can this fluid be used for Transfer Box ATC 700 in BMW 2007 3.0si insted of BMW DTF-1 ?

I see it is being used by Nissan GTR transmssions....so I would guess this must be tough fluid.

I wish anyone from Motul could chip in here

Am I seeing it right that this fluid is SUITABLE for replacement for BMW ATC xDrive recommended BMW OE DTF-1 fluids???

In EU I am getting it for about $10 while Ravenol is $25 and BMW OE
BMW DTF 1 , Part Number 83 22 2 409 710 ,
BMW MTF-LT-3 , Part Number 83 22 0 397 244

are above $50

Has anyone had ANY experience in actually using those fluids for transfer box for BMW ATC xDrives?

been to France 10x of times...hence i was thinking of Motul as a good company. Now, after I have even emailed them to look at threads and no one is even bothering to respond...
this may change.
