First post. Big thanks to everyone who contributes and makes BITOG possible.

My situation: I'm changing front and rear differential oil on a 2022 F150 4x4 with e-locker. 75w85 GL-5 is spec.

After looking at The Mega 75w90 Test Results, Motul Gear 300 seemed like a good option, and I found a good deal on Amazon.

Before I commit to using this stuff, I have some questions/concerns for people that are familiar with it:
- Is it typical for unopened bottles of Gear 300 to reek of oil/additives right out of the box? (mine do, but reminds me of ATF)
- Assuming the smell is normal, is Gear 300 a good (or safe) candidate for light truck applications and longer service intervals?
Why I ask: The fine print on the label says "Transmission and differential fluid" as opposed to just "gear lubricant" like my leftover Mobil 1 and Supertech bottles.

Also, most of the literature and discussions I have found relate to racing applications, or use with transmissions in Japanese and European sports cars.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

It will perform well along with many other brands. I don't get hung up on the brand. If it meets the specs and priced right, I will use it regardless of the brand and my differential will still last many many miles.

No complaints here, I use the gear 300 75-90 in the impreza's rear differential and 5spd. Smooth shifting.

Just changed my wife's RAV4 transfer case and rear differential with motul 75-85.

I use Motul Gear300 LS 75w90 in my Range Rover L405 with rear limited slip diff. No problem. But next time I’d like to use Amsoil Severe Gear 75w110..

I’m using the mineral 80w90 and it’s been great. Really quieted the rear and transfer case down.

All normal. Strong smell is from the sulfur-based extreme pressure additives. Use with confidence.
Sulfur-based EPs can only be used in GL5 lubricants because they are corrosive to yellow metals. Being that Gear 300 is rated for both GL4 and GL5 (it is specifically rated for helical gearboxes which are GL4 only) it cannot have sulfur-based EPs.

HPL’s Gear Life lubes do not use sulfur-based EPs, either.

Put it in my '17 Tacoma Offroad at ~15k then again at ~60k miles. At 115k now, I'm about ready for another change. I would love to get a UOA, but at $50 I don't think my curiosity is that high.

(@motul if you are listening: PLEASE put this stuff in the squeeze bags like Amsoil)

Get yourself a bottle pump with ~2’ of hose on the end of it. I just leave the bottle on the ground so it’s a solid base to pump from.

This specific one you can contact @Pablo for:
