Since it looks like Mobil 1 is going to a group III base. I'm looking into other oils. Currently use Mobil 1 0W-40.

This will be for my '06 VW GTI with the 2.0T FSI engine (gas). Spec is for a 502.00 rating.

Was considering ELF Excellium LDX 5W-40 but now I'm looking at the Motul 8100 E-tech 0W-40 product.

I'm sure the Motul is a full synthetic group IV or V ? The ELF I'm not sure what it is. Does anyone know?

Opinions on the Motul product as well as the ELF product?

Thanks!

David

That is a great oil from all that I've read about it. I considered buying it for my VW 1.8T but settled on Lubromoly 0W-40 since my Advance Autoparts store stocks it for $32/5L. I really like this Lubromoly oil...great power/turbo response and gas mileage. It's 70% PAO according to its MSDS. Tried the Lubromoly 5W-40 but gas mileage and power/response dropped. Maybe one day I'll try the Motul 0W-40 oil for fun. I did not like what I saw of Elf 5W-40 in the used oil analysis forum. Aside from that, supposedly Elf 5W-40 became at least partly a Group 3 oil a few years ago.

I've not considered Lubromoly before. Perhaps I will pop down to my local Advance Auto and see if they carry that product.

If in fact ELF is group III then I feel that I will not use it. The Motul product seems like it is almost overkill and it is a bit pricey but it probably is among the best oils.

My local store does not carry Lubro Moly. Anyone know who carries the synthetic 0W-40 line?

Thanks,

David

The store near me is the only one I've ever seen who carries Lubromoly. The manager is just a cool guy I guess! You'd have to order it online which makes it less appealing.
When I was Motul shopping online, I found one place that was so much cheaper than the rest. I don't have the link anymore but found it by searching for "Motul 0W-40" or something like (maybe "E-Tech" too) that on Yahoo.

ecodetuning.com

i've been using motul 8100 for about 2 intervals now, and it seems like an excellent oil. i've bought from these guys, but they're local to me, by far the cheapest i've ever seen.

I just recently switched from Mobil 1 0W40 (in light of what I'd read here and elsewhere) to GC 0W30 in my 2004 Passat 1.8T -- I had considered Motul but the time for an oil change came up before I could order some Motul so I went with the GC I would get at the AZ (I sound like a rapper! -- "Gotta get some GC at the AZ, foe shizle!")

Anyway, I'm still considering going to 8100, what is so "Great" about it vs GC?

The 8100 is great oil, the Honda S2000 club over here use it and swear by it. I think its very similar to the current Mobil 1 and has similar specs, but I agree with the sentiment that if Mobil are going the G3 route then an alternative needs to be found...8100 is a fantastic alternative, in fact I'd bet its a bit better.
Im going to go with the 300V range, although it does not carry the ACEA A3 spec required for warenttee purposes Im not too bothered since I know it will exceed the performance requirement...Motul don't care to put their racing oils through those hoops.

Group I, II, III - are variously treated petroleum feedstocks to make different quality levels of basestocks

Group III - Severely Treated Petroleum to get the vast majority of molecules the correct size (A ruling a few years ago started allowing these to be called "Synthetic" because they approached Group IV in quality. Previously this was not considered synthetic by indusrty standards).

Group IV - PAO (Polyalpholefin) - Molecules custom built from petroleum based constituents to make a basestock.

Group V - Non PAO Synthetic - Mostly Esters (Fatty Acid Based - Mostly Plant).

In General Group V Basestocks are considered the very best. They have some unique qualities and are often used for ultra-high end lubricants for things like Jet-Turbines. There are a few high-end Auto Synthetics (Mostly Racing) that are Full Esters. These are very expensive.

The best auto synthetics available are generally Group IV PAO. An example is Castrol Syntec 0w30 European Formula (German Castrol). These are pretty expensive basestocks.

Group III varies in quality. Some like the Shell Basestock used in Shell Helix Ultra or Rotella T Synthetic are likely as good as some group IV's. They seem to be taking over the retail Synthetic market due to cheaper production prices. Castrol Syntec 10w30 is an example of a Group III based oil.

been using amsoil series 3000 for two years and considering a move to motul. 300v or the 8100 series. older cars but in great shape. 96 nissan pathfinder, 97 dodge intrepid, 97 dodge stratus. all with about 125k miles. any thoughts, advice will be appreciated.

I also am considering Motul 0W-40 in my new Jeep SRT8. Car calls for
Mobil 1 0W-40 or equivelent.
Other considerations are
Amsoil European 5W-40
German Castrol 0W-30

Not sure if GC or Motul meet the Chrysler spec
for the 6.1 hemi though.

ELF Excellium LDX 5W-40 is a Group III … (probably a XHVI Grp III+).
