Saw this clip from a recent episode of MotorWeek, that has Pat Goss showing an oil filter that has media that separated causing damage to an engine. The media didn't look that dark. I think he has his own repair shop. Anybody recognize what brand/model of oil filter that he shows? The video starts at 12:32. Oil Filter Motor Week

googled it and not really much info . Had metal end caps on the one he showed . Says to spend the extra and buy OEM from the dealer....yeah , OK , big tip there .
I think it's possible for any filter to have torn media , it might happen a lot and could be any brand but is never seen unless all filters were open and inspected so how are we supposed to know.

That was a very good MW segment. I watched the whole episode and enjoyed all of it. The filter section was actually kind'a boaring compared to what we discuss here at BITOG but ahhh, it broke up the episode a bit between the Farrari and the Large Car segment.

He had what looked like an AC Delco Classic can cut apart there-but the media reminded me of some of the OCOD PH16s (OEM sized Jeep 4.0) I've seen cut apart-wide pleats, getting smashed by oil pressure.
lets see umm! i don't have to worry about that as i been saying for years about paper filters!!! stainless steel filters the only way to go!!

The reason I buy AC Delco oil filters. My truck came with a PF48, that's what I put back on.

If indeed the oil filter was attributed to the engine damage, should not Napa or Wix pay to fix the engine?

I discounted that Goss/MW segment the moment he inferred the OEM filters were the best, negating the high-end stuff from the aftermarket. He had similar things to say about lubes a few years ago; use OEM and you cannot go wrong. While true, his position leaves no room for aftermarket placment. Sure, with OEM you can have a reasonble minimum threshold, whereas the aftermarket offers both better and worse options.
In fact, most of his advice is canned garbage, if you ask me. The more you learn, the less you're impressed by him.

With regards to OE vs other filters... they all fail. The guy on the 6.0L segment contends that you should only use Ford (Motorcraft made by Purolator or some other vendor FOR Ford). Probably not bad advice on the surface but even MC filters can fail so there are no absolutes with any brand.
The advice on both those segment probably applies best to people who know nothing about oil filters and don't see any difference between a $1.20 Chung-Feng filter and a $5 Motorcraft or a $10 Ultra. If you educate yourself, you can often find premium features in a lower cost filter and that makes for an educated choice
Some time back I got into a pitched debate over spark plugs. A fella claim tha only MOTORCRAFT spark plugs are good for a particular applicationbut AUTOLITES stink. He couldn't get it thru his head that they were identical and rolled off the same assembly line.
And yes, the established oil filter companies will all stand by their products and should cover the repairs if directly attributable to their filter. I am always suspicious of "this oil filter ate my engine" videos or threads when there wasn't an attempt to recoup the losses. If it did, it's usually relatively easy to document for a true professional. Plus I don't think it's any less onerous to go thru that process with an OE brand than an aftermarket. Might be a littel easier if you had a deal do it... but who what to pay out all that cash year after year on the miniscule chance that an oil filter might fail.
I say learn to choose your products and learn to do your own maintenance properly. You are the most motivated person in your cars life to see to it the work is done well and properly.
