Motorcycle tires,

I've had them on a couple of bikes. They seemed to do the job. But when I bought my current bike, It had Pirelli Night Dragon tires on it. Man they were the best handling tires I ever had on a bike. My bike is a Police Road King. They only reason I changed them out was they were 10 years old, but still handled great. If you can find a set in your size, I would give them a try.,,,

Thanks...........good info,,,,,,,,,,found the D404 at the Honda store, 200 bucks installed , the Harley store wanted 300 tire and install..............I will be going to the Honda store, lol.........wierd world nowdays

If you’re getting tires for a Harley, you should check out the Dunlop American Elite.
They have a harder compound in the center patch, and a softer compound on the outer.
 
I’ve run Michelin Pilot Sport or Road 4/5. Also Bridgestone Battlax T31 and BT-46. All are great tires.

The only tires I have had issues with were Dunlops. I don’t remember what models unfortunately.
 
I currently have Dunlops on most of my streetbikes. Q5's (great tires) and yesterday I put a set of Roadsmart IV's ( I haven't ridden the bike yet, but the RS III's did a good job on another bike, and reviews are favorable) on my idea of a touring bike. I paid more for those tires than I've ever paid for a set of tires before. Hurray for Bidenflation.
 
I gather this is a cruiser type bike, since talking "Harley Shop" and not something that would take sport touring tires in the sense of the Michelin Pilot Road 4/5/6, or Dunlop Roadsmart 4, Pirelli Anget GT, etc?

D404's are a solid tire, predictable, etc. I didn't see the tread life (7,000 miles on a rear) out of them in my XS1100 however that was a number of years ago.

Roadsmart 4's are the best Sport touring tires going now, love them.

I ran Battleax T31s on a cruiser. It got tippier at slow speeds but the handling was super good. The BT-46s are bias ply FWIW.

I run on the ragged edge splitting california. Need the best you can. Nothing but mitchelin 2 and mitchelin3 commanders.

Doesn't sound like you're running on the ragged edge of lane splitting and want to live for the next 5 years until you're too old to ride... however you don't mention how many miles you may put on the bike in that time.

Why not use the same tires? I've also used the 230 Tourmasters on the same XS1100 I mentioned in a previous post. Also put Shinko 777's on another XS1100 I fixed up and sold but did not put a lot of miles on that bike. My feeling is the 230s are more than fine and good tread life. 777s are more than fine and a tad grippier, with less tread life based on other riders that I know who have tried both and run through the tires until needing replacing. Ultimately I sold both XS1100's before the tires needed replacing.

A Virago is not going to test the limits of either tire, nor does it sound like you are into testing limits anymore. I would go with the 230's and keep a good thing going.

I thought about selling it many times due to Dam car drivers pulling in front of me thinking I can stop as fast as the cars....
Anyway, I ride when it is sunny and Summer; definitely less than 1k/yr. So, less than 5k miles.
You confirmed me. I'll stick with 230s. My old ones are installed 10 yrs ago; paid $53 front, $70 rear. Inflation is doubled in 10 yrs. Tread life is not an issue. It's the age and crack lines.
 
Shinko 230's and 712's are both a great value. They stick well, and don't deteriorate in handling as they wear down. Knock against them is they wear quickly, particularly the rear. About half the tire life of something like an Avon Roadrider MKII. The Avon's are twice the price, though, so...

Going back in this thread, there is discussion about the Dunlop 404, and frankly, they are not good tires. I hang out on a couple different motorcycle forums for classic UJM type bikes, and every discussion about tires is virtually void of anyone recommending the 404. Shinko's, yes. Tons of positive mention. Avon, yes, Bridgestone BT46, yes, Pirelli Sport Demon, yes. Dunlop 404 NO.
 
My opinion: Go with the stickiest and best performing tires you can. Not only are they a joy to ride on, but the performance can prevent accidents. Shorter tire life or shorter human life is how I see it.

It's like riding generic dual sport tires, instead of full knobbies in the dirt. The tires will be the proximate cause of the crash.
